Lacrosse notebook: Connerty’s return to sideline a good fit in Cohasset

It can be very difficult, leaving a place you have always called home.

Legendary girls lacrosse coach Kara Connerty found herself at a crossroads in the summer of 2024.

Following much consideration, she opted to turn the page to a new chapter in life, departing Norwell High School after a decorated tenure featuring state championships across an array of sports.

“I think it was just time for a change,” Connerty said. “I think in the summer, I realized that. That was a time where I did some reflection. It was definitely a difficult decision. I grew up in Norwell, I live in Norwell, my family’s from Norwell. But again, at that time it was the best decision for me and my family.”

But it didn’t take that long for Connerty to miss the game. She decided to find a way back to the sideline.

“Missing that fall season (hurt),” said Connerty. “But I knew that if a position became available for lacrosse, I definitely was hoping I’d be coaching by the spring. I find coaching very rewarding, working with young women, trying to empower them.”

Out of the blue, a job posting opened up. It just so happened to be at a fellow South Shore League institution, and a historic one at that when Cohasset High School began a search for a girls lacrosse coach.

“The position became available in January,” said Connerty. “I had left Norwell in August. When that position became available, I just thought: ‘What a terrific opportunity if they offered me the position for this season.’”

It only took a few weeks before the school selected Connerty for the post this past February. She became the latest in a string of four coaches at Cohasset the past four seasons.

Cohasset captured the Div. 4 crown last year with a 14-9 win over Ipswich in the championship. You’d think it would be a stressful task, trying to repeat while installing a new program.

Instead, it has been all systems go for the Skippers, who are off to a 10-2 start on the year.

Connerty began her coaching career at Cohasset as an assistant with its girls soccer team, as well as the school’s co-op gymnastics team with Norwell.

While Connerty coaches, players such as Reese Hansen have taken steps forward on the field. Like her older sisters Elle and Jane, Hansen has helped carry on a winning tradition at Cohasset as a hybrid athlete with the ability to perform just about anything on the field with success. This year, the senior has led the attack, sniping 23 goals and dishing out 17 assists. Hansen will also be following in her siblings’ footsteps, as she is committed to Northwestern.

“It’s been great,” Hansen said. “I’ve been familiar with (Connerty’s) coaching staff through Mass Elite, our club team. So I’d known her coming in, but so far our program is about halfway through the season, and it is just such a positive environment. She’s a tough coach, but I think that’s what we needed, especially after the successful season we had last year. I think we wanted to come in with a tough coach to keep us working hard. She brings so much energy, and has such a passion for the game, that it’s motivated us as a class and a whole program to play at our best. That’s what we plan to do.”

In addition to Hansen, Cohasset has been propelled by the Regan duo with Avery (23 goals, four assists) and Emily (21 goals, eight assists) each lighting up the scoreboard. Kate Greer has created plays offensively herself with 16 goals and 26 assists.

As of Friday morning, Cohasset was ranked second overall in the MIAA’s Div. 4 girls lacrosse power rankings with a rating of 8.2266. The Skippers have climbed to the No. 7 spot in the Herald’s top 25, and they have done so with impressive wins over premier schools such as Reading, Longmeadow and Moses Brown (RI).

However, their two season-changing games came against the likes of titans such as Penn Yan (NY) (an 11-8 win April 14), and the state’s top-ranked team at the time with a wild 11-10 victory over Notre Dame (Hingham) April 29.

“Both of those teams are just so talented and so well-coached,” said Hansen. “I think we knew going into those games how tough they were going to be. But we worked together and in the end, we came out with the win. I think those games will motivate us to keep pushing through the rest of the season, and hopefully winning some more.”

Cohasset still has a difficult schedule ahead, with games against powerhouses such as Sandwich, Hingham, Central Catholic and Norwell remaining.

Yet, it just feels as though the Skippers might just cruise given the way they have been performing.

“It’s just been such a wonderful experience thus far,” Connerty said. “The transition has been terrific. The kids have been so diligent in their work. Obviously, they’ve had four different coaches in four years, some of these seniors. So, I give them so much credit, because they really are a team-first program. It’s just a cohesive group of girls that want to work hard. They were just very enthusiastic from the beginning. The welcome that I received was terrific from them, the administration, the families. It’s just been such a positive start to the season.”

An undefeated squad and intense weather still proved no match for Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) on Friday. Sophomore standout Sadie Lopez finished with five goals, as the Cougars (13-3) handed Walpole its first loss with an epic 13-8 victory on the road.

“We rely on each other so much,” Lopez said. “I think that really showed in this game. We were really trusting each other, especially in the clear, just on offense and defense. I think it really came together well today.”

It was a clash between two of the state’s top-tier schools, and this panned out as such in the early going, as they traded goals during the opening three minutes. Then, the Cougars returned to their dominant form, scoring four straight as Notre Dame constructed a 5-1 advantage.

As the second quarter progressed, Notre Dame began to heat up as Lopez registered two more goals in the closing minutes to provide the Cougars a convincing 8-2 lead at the break.

Many were expecting Walpole (13-1) to make a run, and the Timberwolves staged their pursuit as the second half commenced. As the skies opened up and the downpours began, Sophia Fruci opened the third quarter with a goal, before UMass commit Caitlyn Naughton buried two straight tallies. Then Jenna Wong potted a goal and Walpole was back in it, trailing 8-6 with 6:24 to go in the frame.

When it felt like things were coming apart for Notre Dame, Lopez sniped a free position shot to restore order, giving the Cougars a 9-6 edge with 1:29 to play in the third.

“We just got a timeout,” Lopez said. “We knew we could stop them, and we went on a run there, which was great. We were just able to pull ourselves together, and play the game we know how to play.”

With seconds to play in the third, Emma Whoriskey tallied a goal for Notre Dame Academy to make it 10-6, and the Cougars were off and running.

Taylor Watts added a pair of goals in the victory to aid Notre Dame.

After a tough stretch, is it possible that we are seeing the Cougars starting to regain their spot as the state’s top-ranked team?

“I think there’s pressure in every game,” Lopez said. “We want to win every game, and I think we are thinking about ourselves. But, yeah, (Walpole was) a great team that we want to see again.”

Needham rallies to post impressive win over Newton North

NEWTON — Every time Newton North had an advantage, Needham had an answer.

Needham played a tenacious style of volleyball, overpowering defending state champion Newton North (20-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-19) for an impressive road victory.

Newton North defeated Needham to capture the state title last season, a year after Needham defeated Newton North to cap off its three-peat of state championships. Earlier this season, Newton North upended Needham, but the Rockets could not pull off a season sweep.

Without standout senior Simon Vardeh, who was inactive due to a patellar tendon strain, Newton North (12-3) lacked an integral part of its attack. Though they were able to seize early leads, it was rival Needham (13-2) that repeatedly answered back.

Newton North played its best in the opening set, rattling off a six-point run to turn a tie game into a 14-8 lead. The hosts capitalized on that run to win the first set, 25-20, but Needham stormed right back, dominating the second set, 25-16, establishing the tone for the rest of the matchup.

Having guided four teams to a state championship, Needham coach Dave Powell knows what it takes to reach that elusive next level. With the tournament rapidly approaching, he was pleased with the way his team overcame early adversity.

“We didn’t play hungry in the first set,” said Powell. “We came out with a lack of focus, and I thought Newton North played really well. Then I was glad to see we were able to focus and play more disciplined in the next three sets. We pride ourselves on doing the little things, staying consistent, and being disciplined – and that’s what we were able to do.”

The race to win the third set featured a furious pace. Despite Newton North jumping ahead early, a 14-5 stretch allowed Needham to seize the critical set, 25-16. Newton North showed its resilience in the fourth set, but that was not enough as Needham employed a bend-but-don’t-break approach that yielded a 25-19 victory.

Led by senior leader Will McDonald, Needham continually applied pressure on their hosts throughout the final three sets.

“A win like this shows how hard we’ve been working in practice,” said McDonald (eight kills), who will study at West Point in the fall and play defensive end for the football team. “Newton North is a great team, so this is a good win for us.

“We’re working to be at our best for the postseason. There have been hurdles to jump all season, but we’re holding ourselves to a high standard. It helps that we’re all so close – we play a lot of beach volleyball together in the summer. We show up every day, work hard, and have a lot of fun together.”

Newton North is ranked second in the MIAA D1 power rankings, while Needham is ranked fourth. That will change after this outcome, but the state’s top four teams – including Brookline and Natick – will all still reside Bay State Conference. With Vardeh on the injured list, this game represented an especially daunting challenge for Newton North.

“There were a lot of teachable moments,” said Newton North coach Nile Fox. “We were able to see how we can’t lean on (Vardeh). We need to play together as a team, and I thought we did that. I know we didn’t win, but I’m proud of how hard the team played.”

Fox saw plenty of positives beyond the final score. Freshman Aaron Stein (six kills) delivered one of his best performances of the season, and Fox was encouraged to see his team compete against a perennial title contender without their fiercest weapon.

“Needham got the best of us,” said Fox. “But if we see them again, we’ll be prepared.”

For Needham, another run at the state title awaits. Powell wants his team to build upon its success.

“We’re going to keep working to get better,” said Powell. “And this game was a good step in the right direction.”

Newton North shows grit in holding off tough Milford squad

NEWTON – It trailed in all four sets and lost its top player to injury at the end of the third, but the Newton North boys volleyball team overcame it all to add another signature performance toward the Bay State Conference’s dominance over the rest of the state Wednesday night.

Missing star senior Simon Vardeh for the last frame, the No. 2 Tigers (12-2) showcased their depth and maturity by holding an energetic, No. 15 Milford bunch from forcing a fifth set in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 19-25, 25-20) nonleague win.

Senior setter Paul Nelson (four kills, two blocks) connected with middle hitters Peter Reale (18 kills) and Bryson Mercedes (nine kills, two blocks) for 25 of his 42 assists, anchoring comebacks in the first two frames before several others stepped up in the fourth to withstand Vardeh’s absence.

Newton North now combines with Brookline, Natick and Needham for a 36-0 record against teams outside of their quadrant of Div. 1 titans.

“We had a few kids come in and just play big roles that we practice,” said Tigers head coach Nile Fox “We know things happen, and with our (injury) luck, it always happens to us, so we have to practice being ready for these things. … I was really happy with what we did because it would’ve been so easy for us to roll over and say, ‘We don’t have our best player,’ and give up the game.”

Milford showed plenty of energy and fight, starting all four frames with leads – including advantages as high as 9-6 in the first and 14-10 in the second. Star outside hitter Gus Da Silva was in the middle of each one with a match-high 23 kills, while Diego Inacio-Santos (10 kills) provided depth in competitive starts.

Aside from a 25-19 third set, though, in which the Scarlet Hawks built a 19-16 lead before Vardeh came out for good, it wasn’t enough to keep Newton North down.

The Tigers closed wins in the first set by outscoring Milford 19-9, and the second by outscoring it 16-4.

“It’s not ideal to start off behind, but I think that’s what pushes us,” Fox said. “Being able to come back from little losses or being able to come back from being a few points back. … When we are in those situations, I’m glad we’re showing we’re able to come back and still compete.”

Along with strong passing and serving from libero Brady Dwyer, and pockets of standout play from Vardeh (eight kills, block) and Aaron Stein (10 kills), Nelson’s connection with his middles highlighted both of those runs.

“It’s definitely improving,” Nelson said. “I think we’re doing a lot better. I’m really proud of (Reale) and (Mercedes), both of them. … I think (Reale) is one of, if not the, best middles in the state. I’m really proud of him, I think he’s a really amazing player. I think I need to focus on (setting) him more than I have been.”

“(Reale and Mercedes) were great,” Fox added. “I think the block could’ve been better, but offensively, they were great. (Reale’s) been playing like one of the best middles in the state … I’m just hoping he keeps doing it. He’s a serious problem, and (Mercedes) has been doing nothing but surpassing (high expectations) I already set for him.”

After Milford secured the third, Newton North’s depth delivered in the fourth as it pivoted to use Nelson as a setter and a hitter.

Taz Webber (six assists, ace) stepped into his role well, as did Ben Towvim with a kill and two aces. Stein took off for five kills, as did Reale with five himself.

Newton North needs Vardeh in its Div. 1 title hopes, but for now, this was a great showing.

“It does mean we have some versatility when it comes to lineup changes, even for when we do have (Vardeh),” Nelson said. “But really, with (Vardeh), we’re a different team.”
