Newton North rides Simon Vardeh’s unstoppable performance to victory

NEWTON – In the debate among Bay State Conference elites on which boys volleyball team has the best player in the state, Newton North head coach Nile Fox considers the case officially closed after witnessing something he never has before Friday night.

With a career-high 37 kills, highlighted by notching eight straight in an 8-0 run in the second set, Harvard-bound senior Simon Vardeh was unstoppable for the fourth-seeded Tigers (16-7) in a 3-1 Div. 1 state quarterfinal win (23-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-15) over No. 5 Lexington.

Fox doesn’t shy away from saying Newton North drew the toughest quarterfinal matchup out of the top four seeds, and the Minutemen (20-3) showed that by controlling momentum before Fox called an early timeout in the second set.

Enter Vardeh, who changed the entire flow to get the reigning-champion Tigers back to the Final Four to face tomorrow’s winner between No. 1 Brookline and No. 9 Acton-Boxboro.

“He just showed that he’s the best player in the state today,” Fox said. “That’s what’s expected of him. He’s only shown a lot of greatness these past four years, and this game really cemented it for me. … The performance he did tonight, I’ve never seen anything or coached against it. It was amazing.”

Vardeh did plenty of damage in the first set with seven kills, though Lexington was able to manage around that behind its own three-headed monster and its signature standout team defense.

Nic Sanchez de Rojas (11 kills, 11 digs, 26 serve receptions), Ale Luciani (16 kills, five digs) and Nadav Vachtel (seven kills, 25 serve receptions) anchored the group in a 25-23 win in the first set for the 1-0 lead, and Kolbey Manuelian’s consecutive blocks in the second raised an early lead to 7-3.

Lexington had a great rhythm, but Fox saw something earlier in the set he needed to share with his guys in a timeout.

“After the first set, we went down (in the second),” Fox said. “(Vardeh) caught on fire in the second set and I said, ‘Oh, they can’t stop him.’ I literally brought them in and said, ‘Give him the ball every single time, until he gets stopped.’ He didn’t get stopped. … I said, ‘Paul, give him the ball every single time, I don’t care where you’re at. Give him the ball every time.’ ”

Nelson, setting for the first time since coming back from injury at the start of the tournament, connected with Vardeh six straight times to flip the deficit into a 9-7 lead. Libero Brady Dwyer fed the senior on the next two points, and after Luciani broke up the run with a kill, Vardeh responded with yet another.

He finished with 12 kills in the frame, leading a 22-6 run that changed the whole trajectory of the match.

“I was locked in and it was really fun,” Vardeh said. “I thought everybody really started feeding off that energy. I thought that was a really big momentum shift in the game. Everybody started getting kills, everybody started getting more confident. I’m happy I was able to spark that.”

Vardeh, Dwyer, Nelson and freshman starter Aaron Stein all missed substantial time over the last couple weeks of the regular season with injury. All four are back.

“It sucked to be out,” Vardeh said. “But it’s good to be back and to know that I’m through the injury now, and can play to the fullest of my ability.”

The rest of the Tigers’ lineup dialed up their play after that 8-0 Vardeh run.

Dwyer (eight assists) passed well and anchored the serve receive. Nelson starred in a well-rounded performance (48 assists, three kills, ace) and connected with Amaris Cotto (eight kills) and Peter Reale (nine kills, two blocks), especially, to complement Vardeh. Team defense flourished as well.

All of that was needed against Lexington, which stayed in striking distance through the middle of the third and fourth sets with relentless rallies, a strong serve-receive and its balanced attack.

“I thought they played good,” Vardeh said. “They definitely came out strong, taking that first set. But after that – we know we’re the better team. When we play at the best of our ability, nobody can beat us. After that first set, we really locked in.”

Aside from what Vardeh brought to the table, Fox felt Newton North’s response to Lexington was a reflection of the adversity it’s had to overcome not only this year, but over the last few.

“Those times hurt, but … every time when a wrench gets thrown (in) or something, we always come out on top,” Fox said. “It’s our story. Every year. … We always end up coming back. I think that’s the resilience that we play with.”

A two-time member of the Boston Herald Dream Team while at Newton North, Lowe was part of two Division 1 state championship teams. He went on to have a stellar basketball career at Boston University,  earning a degree in Hospitality Administration in 2010.
“I am blessed to be able to be the next leader of the Eagles program,” said Lowe. “I will put a lot of focus into the development of all players from our middle school up to the varsity team. Sharpening skills that will allow us to play fast, spaced, and aggressive.” … The TRACK at new balance and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) have established a new five-year agreement to host the MIAA Winter Track & Field State Championships and Meet of Champions at the TRACK. Each February, through this agreement, the TRACK at new balance will host approximately 7,000 student athletes from more than 270 MIAA member schools across Massachusetts. Athletes will compete in five separate division championships before advancing to the Meet of Champions, held on the final day of the series.

Baseball

Two years ago, the Winchester basketball team shocked the high school world when they knocked off No. 1 Catholic Memorial as a No. 32 seed.

History repeated itself Monday as senior Alex Casey allowed seven hits and struck out seven in 6.2 innings as No. 32 Winchester upset top-seeded Taunton 6-4. The Red and Black advanced to the Round of 16 where they will face Natick. Nolan Gannon broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh as he singled in a pair of runs to put Winchester ahead for good.

“This is a statement win for our baseball program and our school,” Winchester coach Ed Mcdonald said. “We believe we can compete against anyone in the state and our goal is a state title. We are not done yet.”

Boys lacrosse

Nick Emsing scored four goals, pairing with hat tricks from Luke Allen and Murphy Belvin to power No. 1 BC High (17-3) to a 15-5 win over No. 16 Central Catholic in the Div. 1 second round.

Class notes

Hamilton-Wenham has named Rebecca Brady as its new gymnastics head coach. She takes over for Chris Way, who had been with the program since 2018.

Brady comes to the Generals with significant experience in gymnastics as an athlete and as an instructor.  She has worked at Iron Rail Gymnastics Academy in Wenham for the last two years, working with both the competition teams and the recreational athletes. During this time, she furthered various aspects of her coaching education through USA Gymnastics.  Prior to her stint at Iron Rail, she spent several years instructing at Off the Wall Gymnastics in Plaistow, N.H.

A Pinkerton Academy grad, Brady was a two-time All American and a Level 10 National Qualifier at Southern Connecticut State University.

“We couldn’t be more excited to have Rebecca on board,” said Athletic Director Craig Genualdo. “We’re going to miss Chris. He was a super successful coach and is an incredible human being. The fact Chris recommended her so highly meant a lot.” … Gatorade announced Bradley McCafferty of Austin Prep is its 2024-25 Gatorade Massachusetts Baseball Player of the Year. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior catcher led the Cougars to a 20-2 record this past season.

McCafferty batted .367 with two home runs, 23 RBI and 22 runs scored, posting a .474 on-base percentage, .550 slugging percentage and 1.024 OPS. He also threw out 36.8 percent of would-be base-stealers, cutting down seven runners in 19 attempts.

A two-time All-New England Preparatory School Athletic Council selection, McCafferty is ranked as New England’s No. 4 prospect in the Class of 2026 by Prep Baseball Report and No. 3 in Massachusetts by Perfect Game.

Baseball state tournament preview and predictions

Xaverian showed it was able to bounce back from adversity time and time again to win the Catholic Conference title for the third straight year.

The Hawks open with a familiar foe in Catholic Memorial, then a possible second-round tilt with Franklin or Durfee. Three other Catholic Conference teams (BC High, St. John’s Prep and St. John’s of Shrewsbury) are in the same bracket, making for some juicy early-round contests.

Bishop Feehan and Andover are two talented teams capable of winning some games in the postseason.

Plymouth North rolled to the Div. 2 state title last year and has to be considered one of the favorites again. Their side of the draw is littered with teams from the Patriot League (Hingham, Duxbury and Plymouth South) so they won’t need a scouting report.

Walpole relied on pitching and defense as usual to land the fourth seed and looks to have a good draw. Reading emerged as the top dog in the Middlesex Liberty with 17 wins, while Somerset Berkley and North Attleboro should not be overlooked.

In Div. 3, St. Mary’s is loaded with pitching depth and has the postseason experience to get the job done. Weston and North Reading had really good seasons and could be squaring off in the second round.

Norwell hasn’t received a lot of fanfare but the Clippers are the No. 2 seed and won 16 games so they have to be considered a team to watch. Gloucester went 19-1 and could be looking at a second-round road contest against Sandwich.

The Cape Ann League could have a say in the Div. 4 tournament as Lynnfield is a very talented team, as is Hamilton-Wenham. Unfortunately, they are on the same side of the draw and would be slated to meet in the semifinals.

Top-seeded Pittsfield went 16-4 and should go a long way in the tournament. Two-time state champion Seekonk will bank on the past tourney success to make a long run.

English made history by becoming the first Boston City League school in decades to win a state title. Head coach Christian Ortiz pushed the envelope with an aggressive nonleague schedule and was rewarded with 17 wins and the second seed in Div. 5.

Any time you have a baseball team undefeated this late in the season, that is impressive. Pioneer Valley enters the tournament with a perfect 20-0 record and could have an interesting second-round game if Georgetown advances.

Division 1 state track: Westford Academy’s Ryan Kyle shatters state hurdles record

MEDFORD — The conditions were perfect Thursday on the track.

A mild afternoon was just what the doctor ordered for Ryan Kyle.

The Westford Academy star shattered his own state record in the boys 400-meter hurdles, placing first overall with a time of 52.12 seconds to kick-start this year’s Div. 1 outdoor track and field championships in style at Tufts University.

“I didn’t know it was possible that I could go quicker,” said Kyle. “But my goal is just to win. This is the meet that I had circled on my calendar for the last year, since last Divs. So, I didn’t care about the time. Whether it was 48 (seconds), or 57, I just wanted to win.”

As the evening wore on, Brookline began to build a lead in the boys rankings, accumulating a team-high 44 points. The Warriors won two major events, including the 800-meter run as UMass (Amherst) commit Altamo Aschkenasy placed first out of the second heat with a stunning time of 1:52.76. His teammate Harry Flint clocked in second during the final heat at 1:54.54.

“I didn’t run as well as I could have last week at the Bay State Conference meet,” Aschkenasy said. “So I just had to come here, run in the slow heat, and show the boys what’s up.”

Later in the night, Brookline registered another victory in the two mile competition, as Theodore Butty pulled away in the final lap to place first with a time of 9:05.17.

“Last year, I was kind of in the same situation,” Butty said. “I hit a big PR at the end of my outdoor season. But what I learned from last year was to keep going with the training. Trust the training. That was the biggest part. I think it was perfectly tuned to the racing (today).”

Led by a 1-2 finish in the girls discus throw, Lexington was able to construct a lead in the girls rankings, accruing 44 points as a team. During the event, Ainsley Cuthbertson placed first with a distance of 130 feet, eight inches. Evelyn Radcliffe finished second (120-06 feet).

The Div. 1 outdoor track and field championships are set to resume Saturday.

During one of the final events of the evening, Greta Hammer sprinted to her latest win, placing first in the girls two-mile for Needham with a mark of 10:36.47. The junior outpaced Lexington star Jane Conrad for the crown by 2.15 seconds.

“I went into it kind of nervous,” said Hammer. “I’m always kind of nervous, but I had a pretty good plan. I was just going to hit even-splits throughout the race. Tried to execute that as well as possible.”

St. John’s Prep comes out flying, easily gets past Hingham, 16-4

DANVERS – In the last game of the regular season, the St. John’s Prep Eagles dominated the Hingham Harbormen, 16-4, Friday night at a rainy Glatz Field.

“Hingham is one of the best teams in the state so we had to show up today and we showed up today. That’s what we need to be doing at this time of year, ” Prep coach John Pynchon said.

Both teams came into this matchup as the fourth-ranked team in their respective division; SJP (17-3) in Division 1 and Hingham (17-3) in Division 2 and both used the game as a tuneup before the state tournament.

The Eagles scored five goals in the first seven minutes into the first quarter and this is all they would need for their commanding performance. The Eagles went on to lead 8-1 after the opening quarter. Pynchon called this his team’s best opening quarter of the season.

The rest of the game saw St. John’s Prep play ball control. The hosts ended the first half up 10-3 as they slowed down the pace and looked to work possessions. Hingham showed some life to end the second quarter to make it look close.

The Prep scored again in under two minutes to start the third. They added another three goals for insurance as they entered the final frame up 14-4.  Both teams emptied their benches in the final quarter to allow other players to make an appearance. St. John’s added two more to account for the final.

“In addition to the scoring obviously, I’m very proud of our faceoffs, our defense, ball movement, just an all-around effort.” Pynchon said.

Senior captain midfielder Luke Kelly had four goals for the victors as the leading scorer of the game and fellow senior captain attackman Cam McCarthy also had a hat trick. The Eagles had eight different goal scorers. Although St. John’s only loss was to the defending Connecticut state champion, it will most likely not be the number one seed, despite the dominant season. This should give them a chip on their collective shoulder going into the playoffs and will be one of the fiercest teams to playoff in contention for a state title.

Latin Academy tops O’Bryant to capture BCL boys volleyball title

BOSTON – There is a new king of the Boston City League.

Defending back-to-back-to-back boys volleyball champion O’Bryant no longer wears the crown, as a tenacious Latin Academy team swept the champs, 3-0, at Emmanuel College.

This was a rematch of last year’s city championship. Latin Academy was on the verge of a title a year ago, ahead, 2-1, entering the fourth set, but a resilient O’Bryant pulled off the comeback. That was not the case this year, as Latin Academy won each set – 25-22, 25-19, and 25-20 – in convincing manner.

“Last year hurt,” said Latin Academy coach Nick Mone. “It really stung. This year, we were determined not to let that happen again. We focused on one point at a time. Everybody stepped up, and we did what we needed to do going to win this game.”

Powered by team captain/outside hitter Otavio Perks (13 kills) and setter Max Dong (25 assists), O’Bryant refused to relinquish its title without a proper fight.

But Latin Academy (11-10) spread the ball, defended exceptionally well, and showcased its firepower with a balanced attack from opposite hitter Gabriel Ugoji (seven kills), outside hitter James Urbaez (four aces, eight kills) opposite hitter Timmy Lewis (nine kills) and outside hitter/libero Teddy Stylianopoulos (seven kills, two assists).

“Every player contributed to the win,” said Mone, whose team-oriented approach paid dividends. “It’s been a tough year. We played the tough teams in DI, and we took our lumps. But the goal is to compete with anyone. It’s been hard, but it’s all about building and growing. Seeing the players improve each day makes it all worth it.”

Latin Academy won a back-and-forth affair in the opening set. It was even at 14-14 before Latin Academy finished on an 11-8 run to seize the set, 25-22, and grab the early advantage.

O’Bryant (7-11) was dealt a blow in the second set when outside hitter Louis Chiu was forced to leave the game with a right ankle injury. It was even at eight apiece when Chiu left the game, and that was when libero Tri Duong, the maestro of Latin Academy’s defense, led an attack that prevented O’Bryant from generating any sort of consistent offense.

“That’s my job – never let the ball hit the ground,” said Duong, who captured the game’s Most Valuable Player award. “And it makes my coach happy.”

Latin Academy won the set, 25-19, to take a commanding 2-0 series lead. With a deftness at reacting, positioning, and reading the hitter, Duong stifled opportunities that would have led to O’Bryant seizing momentum.

“We were close last year and it was tough to lose, so we worked extra hard to make this our year,” said Duong. “Winning this title, winning MVP, winning with my teammates, it all feels amazing.”

O’Bryant coach Paul Pitts-Dilley was unable to make the game, as he was present for his son’s surgical procedure. Filling in were assistant coaches Liam Healey and Nathan Tan. Had a few breaks went its way in that second set, the outcome could have been a whole lot different.

“Pardon my expression, but that’s the way the ball bounces,” said Healey. “The boys left their hearts on the court. Hopefully they use this as fuel for the playoffs. These kids have a lot more fight in them.”

A senior leader, Ugoji played a pivotal part in Latin Academy’s victory. After watching his older brother play for O’Bryant, Ugoji vowed to rearrange the hierarchy in the city. It resulted in a tremendous amount of sweat, tears, and turmoil, but ends with the city championship finding a new home with Ugoji at Latin Academy.

“A lot of struggle went into this,” said Ugoji. “We leaned a lot from the seniors before us, from their guidance and support. Personally, I got a lot of support from my teammates and coaches – I can’t thank them enough for helping me enjoy the ride.

“And it’s not over – we still have states. We’ll go back to practice, lock in, and be ready for whatever comes next.”

After losing in last year’s Round of 16, Latin Academy looks to extend its winning ways in the Division 2 state tournament, where it is possible it once again will see O’Bryant.

“We’re not done yet,” said Mone. “That’s the message here. We have a lot to still play for. We had a tough finish last year, and we’re out for redemption.”

Boston City League track: Boston Latin girls, O’Bryant boys capture titles

BOSTON — Boston Latin Academy girls track and field head coach Brian Leussler can see it in the numbers.

Over 100 student-athletes came out for the team this spring, and it’s performances like Tuesday that will continue to drive those numbers.

The Dragons notched 188 points at the Boston City League outdoor championships at Madison Park to edge runner-up O’Bryant (107 points) to clinch their fifth straight BCL girls title.

“For the last decade we have been on a really strong run. And then the more success we have, the more it just contributes to more kids coming out,” Leussler said.

Headlined by Emma Wadsworth, who claimed three individual victories and was tabbed the girls Most Outstanding Athlete of the Meet, the Dragons took first place in seven other events to run away with the banner.

Wadsworth ruled the long jump (15-01), triple jump (31-09) and high jump (4-10) and is a product of Latin Academy’s stretch of dominance.

“I’ve loved my time on this team,” Wadsworth said. “They’re always so kind to each other, and they always support each other. And it’s been like this since I joined freshman year.”

Also posting first-place finishes for Latin Academy were Ava Gomes in the 100-meter dash (13.30), Leanna Lynch in the 200-meter dash (27.06) and the 400-meter dash (1:02.94), Anjuli Szydlo in the two mile (12:37.24), Maemae Chiang in the 100-meter hurdles (18.27), Demya McClure in the shot put (33-04) and the discus (98-06).

“We had a lot of great performances,” Leussler said. “We had a lot of seniors who really stepped up.”

On the boys side, O’Bryant netted 129 points to clinch its second consecutive championship. In a tightly contested race to the finish line, the victors were ultimately able to stymie Tech Boston Academy (99 points) for first place.

O’Bryant found success in the distance events, as Brandon Spies took first in the two mile (10:17.42) and Adam Kramer placed second in the mile (4:44.21).

“It feels great,” said O’Bryant distance coach Michael Ward. “We have people contributing in all the areas, so we’re really proud of just being really strong across the board.”

Ward said Liam Feliz was one of the many athletes who impressed, placing first in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.74. Feliz opted to switch from baseball to track last spring as a junior.

“I feel like every team is going to say they’re a family, but I feel like we have a great culture here,” Feliz said. “We have a lot of fun and we joke a lot, but when it comes down to it, we’re really out to work.”

O’Bryant took gold in the 4×100 relay (45.27) as Feliz also owned the high jump (6-0). Uchendu Onyeagoro rounded out the winners in the triple jump (42-04).

Rick Barros of Dearborn also shined on Tuesday and was named the male Most Outstanding Athlete of the Meet. He won the 100-meter dash (11.13) and the 200-meter dash (22.34) while also having a hand in the first-place 4×400 relay foursome (3:38.69).

Team New England’s Gilbert Kabamba (Dorchester) falls in national title bout in Oklahoma

Gilbert Kabamba of Dorchester came oh so close to becoming a back-to-back national champion.

But the Dorchester fighter was edged in a split decision during the final bout of the Golden Gloves of America Tournament of Champions on Saturday night in Tulsa, Okla.

Last year Kabamba earned his title with a victory over Sardius Simmons of Flint, Mich. Simmons, a left-handed boxer, got his revenge Saturday with a 3-2 victory in their 198+ pound fight.

“He’s definitely disappointed,” New England Golden Gloves executive director Bob Russo said. “He had a real good tournament. It was close. It was kind of a flip of the coin type thing.”

It was a terrific showing for Team New England as the team finished fourth out of 30 franchises. The team was put together following action this past winter at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

“It was a pretty good finish,” Russo said. “We haven’t finished that highly in quite awhile.”

Kabamba was the only New England fighter to make the finals. Two others lost in the semifinals.
