St. John’s Prep comes out flying, easily gets past Hingham, 16-4

DANVERS – In the last game of the regular season, the St. John’s Prep Eagles dominated the Hingham Harbormen, 16-4, Friday night at a rainy Glatz Field.

“Hingham is one of the best teams in the state so we had to show up today and we showed up today. That’s what we need to be doing at this time of year, ” Prep coach John Pynchon said.

Both teams came into this matchup as the fourth-ranked team in their respective division; SJP (17-3) in Division 1 and Hingham (17-3) in Division 2 and both used the game as a tuneup before the state tournament.

The Eagles scored five goals in the first seven minutes into the first quarter and this is all they would need for their commanding performance. The Eagles went on to lead 8-1 after the opening quarter. Pynchon called this his team’s best opening quarter of the season.

The rest of the game saw St. John’s Prep play ball control. The hosts ended the first half up 10-3 as they slowed down the pace and looked to work possessions. Hingham showed some life to end the second quarter to make it look close.

The Prep scored again in under two minutes to start the third. They added another three goals for insurance as they entered the final frame up 14-4.  Both teams emptied their benches in the final quarter to allow other players to make an appearance. St. John’s added two more to account for the final.

“In addition to the scoring obviously, I’m very proud of our faceoffs, our defense, ball movement, just an all-around effort.” Pynchon said.

Senior captain midfielder Luke Kelly had four goals for the victors as the leading scorer of the game and fellow senior captain attackman Cam McCarthy also had a hat trick. The Eagles had eight different goal scorers. Although St. John’s only loss was to the defending Connecticut state champion, it will most likely not be the number one seed, despite the dominant season. This should give them a chip on their collective shoulder going into the playoffs and will be one of the fiercest teams to playoff in contention for a state title.

Latin Academy tops O’Bryant to capture BCL boys volleyball title

BOSTON – There is a new king of the Boston City League.

Defending back-to-back-to-back boys volleyball champion O’Bryant no longer wears the crown, as a tenacious Latin Academy team swept the champs, 3-0, at Emmanuel College.

This was a rematch of last year’s city championship. Latin Academy was on the verge of a title a year ago, ahead, 2-1, entering the fourth set, but a resilient O’Bryant pulled off the comeback. That was not the case this year, as Latin Academy won each set – 25-22, 25-19, and 25-20 – in convincing manner.

“Last year hurt,” said Latin Academy coach Nick Mone. “It really stung. This year, we were determined not to let that happen again. We focused on one point at a time. Everybody stepped up, and we did what we needed to do going to win this game.”

Powered by team captain/outside hitter Otavio Perks (13 kills) and setter Max Dong (25 assists), O’Bryant refused to relinquish its title without a proper fight.

But Latin Academy (11-10) spread the ball, defended exceptionally well, and showcased its firepower with a balanced attack from opposite hitter Gabriel Ugoji (seven kills), outside hitter James Urbaez (four aces, eight kills) opposite hitter Timmy Lewis (nine kills) and outside hitter/libero Teddy Stylianopoulos (seven kills, two assists).

“Every player contributed to the win,” said Mone, whose team-oriented approach paid dividends. “It’s been a tough year. We played the tough teams in DI, and we took our lumps. But the goal is to compete with anyone. It’s been hard, but it’s all about building and growing. Seeing the players improve each day makes it all worth it.”

Latin Academy won a back-and-forth affair in the opening set. It was even at 14-14 before Latin Academy finished on an 11-8 run to seize the set, 25-22, and grab the early advantage.

O’Bryant (7-11) was dealt a blow in the second set when outside hitter Louis Chiu was forced to leave the game with a right ankle injury. It was even at eight apiece when Chiu left the game, and that was when libero Tri Duong, the maestro of Latin Academy’s defense, led an attack that prevented O’Bryant from generating any sort of consistent offense.

“That’s my job – never let the ball hit the ground,” said Duong, who captured the game’s Most Valuable Player award. “And it makes my coach happy.”

Latin Academy won the set, 25-19, to take a commanding 2-0 series lead. With a deftness at reacting, positioning, and reading the hitter, Duong stifled opportunities that would have led to O’Bryant seizing momentum.

“We were close last year and it was tough to lose, so we worked extra hard to make this our year,” said Duong. “Winning this title, winning MVP, winning with my teammates, it all feels amazing.”

O’Bryant coach Paul Pitts-Dilley was unable to make the game, as he was present for his son’s surgical procedure. Filling in were assistant coaches Liam Healey and Nathan Tan. Had a few breaks went its way in that second set, the outcome could have been a whole lot different.

“Pardon my expression, but that’s the way the ball bounces,” said Healey. “The boys left their hearts on the court. Hopefully they use this as fuel for the playoffs. These kids have a lot more fight in them.”

A senior leader, Ugoji played a pivotal part in Latin Academy’s victory. After watching his older brother play for O’Bryant, Ugoji vowed to rearrange the hierarchy in the city. It resulted in a tremendous amount of sweat, tears, and turmoil, but ends with the city championship finding a new home with Ugoji at Latin Academy.

“A lot of struggle went into this,” said Ugoji. “We leaned a lot from the seniors before us, from their guidance and support. Personally, I got a lot of support from my teammates and coaches – I can’t thank them enough for helping me enjoy the ride.

“And it’s not over – we still have states. We’ll go back to practice, lock in, and be ready for whatever comes next.”

After losing in last year’s Round of 16, Latin Academy looks to extend its winning ways in the Division 2 state tournament, where it is possible it once again will see O’Bryant.

“We’re not done yet,” said Mone. “That’s the message here. We have a lot to still play for. We had a tough finish last year, and we’re out for redemption.”

Boston City League track: Boston Latin girls, O’Bryant boys capture titles

BOSTON — Boston Latin Academy girls track and field head coach Brian Leussler can see it in the numbers.

Over 100 student-athletes came out for the team this spring, and it’s performances like Tuesday that will continue to drive those numbers.

The Dragons notched 188 points at the Boston City League outdoor championships at Madison Park to edge runner-up O’Bryant (107 points) to clinch their fifth straight BCL girls title.

“For the last decade we have been on a really strong run. And then the more success we have, the more it just contributes to more kids coming out,” Leussler said.

Headlined by Emma Wadsworth, who claimed three individual victories and was tabbed the girls Most Outstanding Athlete of the Meet, the Dragons took first place in seven other events to run away with the banner.

Wadsworth ruled the long jump (15-01), triple jump (31-09) and high jump (4-10) and is a product of Latin Academy’s stretch of dominance.

“I’ve loved my time on this team,” Wadsworth said. “They’re always so kind to each other, and they always support each other. And it’s been like this since I joined freshman year.”

Also posting first-place finishes for Latin Academy were Ava Gomes in the 100-meter dash (13.30), Leanna Lynch in the 200-meter dash (27.06) and the 400-meter dash (1:02.94), Anjuli Szydlo in the two mile (12:37.24), Maemae Chiang in the 100-meter hurdles (18.27), Demya McClure in the shot put (33-04) and the discus (98-06).

“We had a lot of great performances,” Leussler said. “We had a lot of seniors who really stepped up.”

On the boys side, O’Bryant netted 129 points to clinch its second consecutive championship. In a tightly contested race to the finish line, the victors were ultimately able to stymie Tech Boston Academy (99 points) for first place.

O’Bryant found success in the distance events, as Brandon Spies took first in the two mile (10:17.42) and Adam Kramer placed second in the mile (4:44.21).

“It feels great,” said O’Bryant distance coach Michael Ward. “We have people contributing in all the areas, so we’re really proud of just being really strong across the board.”

Ward said Liam Feliz was one of the many athletes who impressed, placing first in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.74. Feliz opted to switch from baseball to track last spring as a junior.

“I feel like every team is going to say they’re a family, but I feel like we have a great culture here,” Feliz said. “We have a lot of fun and we joke a lot, but when it comes down to it, we’re really out to work.”

O’Bryant took gold in the 4×100 relay (45.27) as Feliz also owned the high jump (6-0). Uchendu Onyeagoro rounded out the winners in the triple jump (42-04).

Rick Barros of Dearborn also shined on Tuesday and was named the male Most Outstanding Athlete of the Meet. He won the 100-meter dash (11.13) and the 200-meter dash (22.34) while also having a hand in the first-place 4×400 relay foursome (3:38.69).

Division 1 track relays: Reign continues for mighty St. John’s Prep

NEW BEDFORD – St. John’s Prep kept its dynastic run going Sunday, winning its fifth consecutive MSTCA Div. 1 boys track and field relay title at New Bedford High School.

In track and field, depth can make a world of difference.

“Our team is definitely built for this type of meet,” said St. John’s Prep coach Zach Lankow. “It’s a measure of depth, which we view as huge for a team meet. This is one of the three meets we circle – the conference championships which we just had Wednesday, this one, and the Div. 1 meet in a week and a half. This is a true team event, especially the field events. Nice for them to get a little more ‘relay feel’. But it’s a volume event too.”

The Eagles accumulated 81 points as a group – 20 more than runner-up Lexington. They captured three wins en route to bringing home the Div. 1 crown, including the 4×100-meter relay. Ahmir Hykel, Dayvian Sullivan, Aaron Radke and Andrew McManmon combined to set a meet record in the event (41.89 seconds), unseating the prior mark set last year by Catholic Conference rival Xaverian. Hykel and Sullivan also joined Doug Clement and Daniel Padley during a win for the Eagles in the 1600 SMR (3:31.78).

Led by Anthony Ragosa, Gael Garcia and Nick Sideridis, St. John’s Prep also placed first in the boys shot put relay (44.63 meters).

Among the girls teams, Newton North kept its own successful run going by winning the Div. 1 crown for a second straight year, placing first with 82 points. The Tigers dominated from start to finish, capturing five events while sprinkling in top-tier results the rest of the day. Kara Tsai, Hava Shenkman, Audrey Welstead and Ciara Evans propelled their group to a win in the 1600 SMR (4:08.30). Shenkman, Evans and Welstead also teamed up with Lila Anapolle for a victory in the 4×400 (4:02.35).

Meanwhile, Sophie Finkelstein, Mia Mescher, Isabella Mangada and Brooke Bennett helped the Tigers set a school record time in the 4×200 (1:43.95).

In the field events, Finkelstein, Blake MacNeal and Aleena Parker carried Newton North to a first place finish with a combined distance of 15.46 meters during the long jump relay. MacNeal and Parker also played vital roles during the winning triple jump relay for the Tigers (31.94 meters), joining Mescher to accomplish the feat. In a heated chase for the crown, Newton North bested runner-up Lexington by eight points in the standings.

“Obviously, we’re deep,” said Newton North coach Mike Travers. “We have a deep roster of jumpers and sprinters, and they all performed to expectation today. We practiced hard for the last 10 days. They knew what they wanted to do, and they did it. They performed.”

A few other schools made headlines during Sunday’s Div. 1 relays, including BC High, which shattered two meet records as the showcase progressed. Owen Geagan, Greg McGrath, John Wilson and Shamus Larnard blazed to a stunning time of 7:53.04 in the boys 4×800. Wilson, Geagan and McGrath also teamed up with Theo Weiss to set a new highwater mark in the 4×1600 (17:47.58).

Reese Connors, Alex Hofman, Logan Smith and Juan Talisayon combined to set a meet record in the boys 4×200 (1:27.44) for Newton North.

Brookline dominates against undermanned Newton North

BROOKLINE – A perfect storm of injuries robbed the boys volleyball community of an epic dual between arguably the state’s two top teams Thursday night.

Top-ranked Brookline found different value, though, in a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-23 27-25) over rival and second-ranked Newton North.

With four key Tigers (11-6) starters out with injuries likely until the state tournament, the Warriors – playing the first of four games in a six-day stretch – used the opportunity to filter in a mix of their regulars and the end of the bench.

What they got was a glimpse of a promising future, much-needed rest for the starters, and at least a share of the Bay State Conference Carey title, which the program hasn’t won in well over a decade.

“That was a great opportunity for my starters to rest, and also a great opportunity for my second squad to show me who is the next guy,” said Brookline head coach Lexi De La Cruz. “I got a good idea of who are my subs (in the tournament), and I’m super happy I also got to see my freshmen – who are the future of this program – play against a team like Newton North.”

The Warriors had subbed out all of its typical starters after building a 19-8 lead in a dominant first set, aside from libero Andrew Bacon. They began the next two sets with a few of them off the floor, too, before the battle of the benches saw Newton North force some starters back in in key moments.

Freshman outside hitter Will Kiger – who De La Cruz called a future face of the program – posted eight kills playing alongside the depth of the bench and current starters. That includes two to close out the 25-17 first set, and two to close out a 25-23 second set the Warriors needed to rally in. Freshman setter Luis Suarez-Romero dished five assists around a block in the third set in a promising showing, and Flynn Guemple had six assists in the first two.

Sebi Levi had a positive impact in the second set at libero, while Luka Gallucci and Zachary Spencer played well in heightened roles.

For star setter Alec Smagula it was nice to flip roles with the bench and work with more members of the team to take down a key opponent.

“It’s always great to get the whole team in the game, but I think this one’s a little bit special because it’s against Newton North – that’s our rival,” he said. “It’s just super good to get the freshmen in, get some varsity guys that don’t usually see the court as much. To get them to play against one of the big four is a really cool feeling. … It’s just so much fun to be able to cheer for the people that support us throughout the entire year.”

Newton North head coach Nile Fox was pleased with how his own team played in the battle of the benches, stepping up for injuries to star outside hitter Simon Vardeh, star libero Brady Dwyer, setter Paul Nelson and sophomore outside Aaron Stein.

Typical starters Peter Reale and Amaris Cotto had almost their typical impact, as did fellow rotation regular Bryson Mercedes. Around them, sophomore Taz Webber and Ben Towvim played well.

A big run in the second took a 15-11 run that forced Brookline starters back in, and another one in the third for a 20-16 lead did the same. Even after those starters came back in, the Tigers rallied from a 24-22 deficit for a 25-24 lead.

Star outside hitter Kris Vaivars posted three kills and a block in a 9-2 run to turn the second set’s deficit into a 20-17 lead. Smagula dished seven assists in the closeout, and had six assists with a kill to negate the third’s deficit. Amir Tomer showed off his typical well-rounded play and right-side Conor Christopher played well.

“They’re incredible,” De La Cruz said. “I think the main reason is (Smagula). … (He) is a true quarterback of this team.”

Brookline now has at least a share of the conference title. A Natick loss to Needham on Tuesday, or a Warriors win over Framingham, secures the out-right crown.

Top-ranked Brookline boys avenge only volleyball loss, down Needham 3-0

NEEDHAM – No. 3 Natick handed the No. 1 Brookline boys volleyball team its first loss of the year last week.

Brookline made sure it stayed their only loss Tuesday night.

Behind fast starts in the first two sets and strong finishes in the last two, the Warriors (13-1) further solidified their confidence as a leading Div. 1 title contender with another 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-22, 25-18) over No. 4 Needham – this time in a gym none of them had ever won in before.

Alec Smagula posted 15 of his 35 assists in a slugfest of a third set, pairing with Kris Vaivars (17 kills, three aces) to anchor an otherwise well-rounded win.

After losing in five sets when it didn’t play its best against Natick, this was a major boost for Brookline with the state tournament less than two weeks away.

“I think that loss kind of woke us up a little bit, we were getting a little bit too comfortable in the spot that we were,” said Warriors head coach Lexi De La Cruz. “It also helped the coaches figure out what we needed to work on. … Right now, I think the confidence is better than last week. We’re heading into playoffs.”

“(Natick) is a good team and they made us pay for (a slow return from April break),” Vaivars added. “Coming back from that loss, we know we don’t want that to happen again. So, good win today.”

Needham took some time to get into its rhythm, falling into 6-1 holes in the first two sets. The first never saw it get closer than a 15-12 deficit, but a few quality stretches in the middle of the second, and most of the third set, showed the tenacious battle to expect if the two teams meet again in the state tournament.

Serving improved in that second set, and Nathaniel Ross and Luke Vivaldi spread the wealth to Will McDonald, Matt Cloonan (five kills), Andrew Kurdziel (four kills, five blocks), Jeremy Smith (six kills, block) and Will Rozman (nine kills) to pull Needham within a 14-13 deficit before teams traded 10 straight side-outs. Kurdziel ended the stretch with a kill, and his two consecutive blocks of Vaivars gave it a 22-20 lead.

But out of a timeout, Brookline ended the second set on a 5-0 run – with a Liam Raybould block sandwiched by four Needham hitting errors. The back-and-forth continued into a 15-15 third set as Tyler Goldberg’s defense off the bench gave the Rockets a significant boost, and Rozman heated up for five kills, but the Warriors took 10 of the next 13 points.

“My kids are focusing on getting the bigger run out of the two teams,” De La Cruz said. “We know that they’re going to get their points, we’re just trying to get the last run.”

Energy and belief from the whole group played a major role in fending off the Rockets.

“Our energy was high the whole time,” Vaivars said. “Once we got that lead, we just knew if we kept pushing, we would win. … We’re all good friends. We all want to support each other, create an energy. And I just think the culture we have at Brookline allows us to do that.”

Strong serve-receive and an aggressive attack played other major roles.

Needham’s block – anchored by Kurdziel, arguably the state’s top middle hitter – challenged Brookline to finish off points after several rallies. Smagula assisted Vaivars nine times, while Amir Tomer (eight kills, block), Liam Raybould (six kills, block), Conor Christopher (six kills, block) and Luka Gallucci also recorded kills.

“I knew that (Kurdziel) was going to get blocks,” De La Cruz said. “I was telling my kids, ‘Hey, it doesn’t matter if he’s going to get you once, twice or thrice. In the end, you’re going to get your points, so stay aggressive.’ That’s what happened. … We were aware that they’ve got a good block on the other side.”
