CA Alters Girls’ Track and Field Championship Rules After Trans Athlete Win

California sports officials changed the eligibility rules of a high school track and field state championship last minute after President Donald Trump called out the state for allowing a transgender-identifying male to snag a victory and disenfranchise female athletes.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) told Fox News Digital on Tuesday that the competition will now include the female athletes who did not qualify for the competition, who may have placed higher if the transgender-identifying athlete were not participating. The announcement occurred only hours after Trump posted to Truth Social, threatening to withhold federal funding from the state over the debacle. President Trump said:

California, under the leadership of Radical Left Democrat Gavin Newscum, continues to ILLEGALLY allow “MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’S SPORTS.” This week a transitioned Male athlete, at a major event, won “everything,” and is now qualified to compete in the “State Finals” next weekend. As a Male, he was a less than average competitor. As a Female, this transitioned person is practically unbeatable. THIS IS NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS. Please be hereby advised that large scale Federal Funding will be held back, maybe permanently, if the Executive Order on this subject matter is not adhered to. The Governor, himself, said it is “UNFAIR.” I will speak to him today to find out which way he wants to go??? In the meantime I am ordering local authorities, if necessary, to not allow the transitioned person to compete in the State Finals. This is a totally ridiculous situation!!!

The federation claims it decided to change its policy after the end of Saturday’s Masters Qualifiers round, not after President Trump’s statement.  

“The CIF values all of our student-athletes, and we will continue to uphold our mission of providing students with the opportunity to belong, connect, and compete while complying with California law and Education Code. With this in mind, the CIF will be implementing a pilot entry process for the 2025 CIF State Track and Field Championships,” the federation said in a statement. 

Under this pilot entry process, any biological female student-athlete who would have earned the next qualifying mark for one of their Section’s automatic qualifying entries in the CIF State meet, and did not achieve the CIF State at-large mark in the finals at their Section meet, was extended an opportunity to participate in the 2025 CIF State Track and Field Championships. The CIF believes this pilot entry process achieves the participation opportunities we seek to afford our student-athletes.

The policy change will ultimately allow at least two female athletes to compete for the state title after they lose to a trans-identifying male. The male athlete competing as a girl for Jurupa Valley High School won first place for the triple jump and long jump over the weekend, according to the report. 

President Trump did not explicitly name the school or athlete in his post to Truth Social.

The Jurupa Unified School district responded to President Trump’s post in a statement to Fox News Digital, contending that the district is following California state law and CIF policy by allowing students to compete on teams and in competitions “consistent with their gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.”

The office of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) also responded to the outlet, praising the federation for revising its policy. Newsom notably broke with his party during a conversation with conservative activist Charlie Kirk, chief of the popular organization Turning Point USA, in March by calling males competing in girls’ sports “deeply unfair.”

“CIF’s proposed pilot is a reasonable, respectful way to navigate a complex issue without compromising competitive fairness — a model worth pursuing. The Governor is encouraged by this thoughtful approach,” Newsom’s office said. 

The Department of Education launched a Title IX investigation of CIF in February after President Trump signed an executive order called “Keeping Men out of Women’s Sports,” which states that under Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, “educational institutions receiving Federal funds cannot deny women an equal opportunity to participate in sports.” After he signed the order, California openly expressed its plans to flout it in favor of catering to “gender identity.”

Second Maine School District Repeals Pro-Trans Policy

A second Maine school district has voted to revoke its pro-transgender policies in defiance of Democrat Gov. Janet Mills.

The state’s Regional School Unit (RSU) 24 school board voted on Tuesday to join the Hodgdon School Board in scrapping its transgender policies, which included allowing students to use bathrooms and facilities based on a created “gender identity” rather than biological reality, the Maine Wire reported.

“In a 7-1 vote RSU 24 voted to rescind its previous transgender policy (pictured here) which also included recognizing the student’s identity even in defiance of the parent’s wishes. The district includes six schools and encompasses the towns of Eastbrook, Franklin, Gouldsboro, Mariaville, Steuben, Sorrento, Sullivan, Waltham, and Winter Harbor.

The district’s former policy titled “Transgender and Gender Expansive Students” instructed schools to allow students to use bathrooms, changing rooms, and locker rooms that align with their self-proclaimed “gender identity” instead of biological sex.

The old policy additionally instructed schools to identify students by their preferred “gender identity” — even at the objections of parents — and told schools to avoid gender-based activities and practices as possible, according to the report.

“In the event that a student and their parent or legal guardian do not agree with regard to the student’s gender identity or gender expression, the school shall abide by the wishes of the student with regard to their gender identity and gender expression while at school,” the policy reportedly reads. 

The school board ultimately repealed the entire policy, “reaffirming parental rights and protecting girls from being forced to change in front of biological males,” the report continues. The decision also brings the district into alignment with President Donald Trump’s day-one executive order mandating that intimate facilities be used according to sex rather than “gender identity.” 

The district’s change does not necessarily pertain to trans-identifying males playing on girls’ sports teams, as the school board left that decision up to the Maine Principals Association (MPA), which oversees high school sports, according to the report. Gov. Mills and the MPA have openly defied the Trump administration’s order protecting girls’ sports and spaces, leading to investigations and an ongoing funding battle.

Rep. Gill Slams USA Fencing Chair for Comparing Parents of Female Athletes to KKK Members

Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) slammed the chairman of USA Fencing by bringing up his social media posts comparing parents of female athletes to Ku Klux Klan members and calling them “whiny” for not wanting their daughters to compete against transgender individuals.

During a House Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) subcommittee hearing held Wednesday, after a female fencer faced repercussions for refusing a match with a transgender opponent, USA Fencing Chair Damien Lehfeldt flailed when trying to avoid responsibility:

“Do you think that parents who don’t want their daughters competing against men in women’s sports are whiny?” Gill asked. 

When Lehfeldt answered, “No, sir,” the congressman incredulously responded, “You don’t? Why did you write that on social media? I’ve got a picture here where you posted that.”

“You were allegedly responding to a parent who didn’t want their daughter being beaten up by men in sports competitions,” Gill said, referencing a screenshot of the fencing official’s social media. “You said, ‘I’m not going to pull her from the sport and write a whiny email announcing my departure.’” 

Lehfeldt had little excuse to offer, claiming his post was an “inappropriate” message that he “regretted” and deleted.

“I certainly don’t feel that way anymore,” he claimed.

Gill moved on, bringing up another post where Lehfeldt likened parents of female fencers to members of the white supremacist KKK group. 

“Do you think that parents who don’t want their daughters competing against men in sports should be compared to the Ku Klux Klan?,” he said. “No,” Lehfeldt responded.

“Responding allegedly to a lady who had these concerns [about trans athletes]: ‘the only wizard that’s going to dig you out of the myopic hole you put yourself and your family in is one of the quote ‘grand wizard variety,’” Gill quoted from the chair’s social media page.

“Inappropriate, sir,” Lehfeldt again said. “And I acknowledge that I said it and I will commit to never making a message like that again.”

All Lehfeldt could do was apologize for the messages he posted, but he refused to apologize to Stephanie Turner, the fencing athlete who was hit with a 12-month probation from USA Fencing after taking a knee in protest instead of facing off against a male who claims to be a woman in a March competition:

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who has been on a fiery crusade against males in women’s spaces, asked the chairman to offer an apology to Turner, who was also present during the DOGE subcommittee hearing:

“Congresswoman Mace, Ms. Turner was given a black card under our rules—” Lehfeldt began, before Mace demanded to know whether or not he would apologize.

“Will you apologize for the way she was treated? So that’s a no,” Mace said, before continuing to chastise him for being unable to look Turner “in the eyes” and own up to his organization’s mistake. 

Turner said she is after more than an apology at this point, opting for pushing for a “change of policy” instead.

“I want more than an apology. I want a change in policy and I want people to start speaking the truth again. And an apology is just empty words without actions to me, so I don’t know how far it would go for me,” the fencer said, according to Fox News.

USA Fencing announced in April that it is preparing to change its gender policy after placing Turner on probation. 

“In the event that USA Fencing is forced to change its current stance in accordance with oversight bodies or federal legislation, the new policy states athletes competing in USA Fencing-sanctioned tournaments must compete according to their biological sex,” the statement, obtained by Fox News, read.
