New Orleans jail escapee seen in new social media post declaring his innocence

Authorities announced Thursday they are investigating another social media post, the second in a week, showing a man who identifies himself as Antoine Massey, a fugitive still on the lam after escaping three weeks ago from a New Orleans jail.

The latest Instagram post, which appears to have been published Wednesday, shows a man standing in front of a blue car who says he is “#AntoineMassey” and has the same distinctive facial tattoos. Massey faces kidnapping and rape charges.

Authorities are not sure when or where the photo reportedly showing Massey was taken. But they “are treating the post as if it’s real,” a senior law enforcement official said. The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to publicly discuss the ongoing investigation into the May 16 escape by 10 inmates.

The group yanked up a faulty cell door, crawled through a hole in a wall behind a toilet where steel bars had been cut and then scaled a barbed wire fence using blankets for protection. It was one of the largest jailbreaks in recent U.S. history. Since then, multiple friends and family members have been arrested, accused of helping the inmates escape. A maintenance worker at the jail was also arrested, though he told investigators he was threatened by one of the inmates who took part in the jailbreak, according to court documents.

State and local officials have heaped criticism on the management of Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson, who has largely blamed the jailbreak on poor infrastructure and the inability to make needed improvements at the 10-year-old $150 million facility.

Eight of the escaped men have been apprehended, while Massey and another fugitive, convicted murderer Derrick Groves, remain on the run. Groves is the grandson of Kim Groves, whose 1994 murder by a New Orleans police officer drew national attention, CBS affiliate WWL-TV reported.

In the Instagram post, the person claiming to be Massey states he is “innocent.” Massey, 32, faces charges of kidnapping, rape, domestic battery involving strangulation and motor vehicle theft.

“We would encourage Mr. Massey to turn himself in and go through proper legal channels for his day in court,” said Deputy U.S. Marshal Brian Fair in an emailed statement. He added it was “unknown at this time” if Massey posted the photo or when it was taken.

Earlier this week, other videos made by Massey surfaced on social media, leading authorities to raid a New Orleans home a little over 2 miles from the jail, where they believed the videos were produced. But they said they only found some of the clothing they believed he wore in the videos.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry urged Massey and Groves on Tuesday to “quit the hide-and-seek game” and turn themselves in.

Officials raised the reward to $50,000 per fugitive, and some family members have called in tips.

WWL-TV spoke to Natasha, the mother of Lenton Vanburen, one of 10 men who escaped from the jail and were recaptured days later.

“Of course I don’t condone him, you know, breaking out of jail … at the end of the day, he’s still my child,” she told the station.

3 more escaped New Orleans jail inmates captured; 2 remain at large

Three more inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail earlier this month have been captured, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced Monday. Two escapees remain at large.

Inmate Lenton Vanburen was detained in Baton Rouge, Murrill said on social media. Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald were arrested in Walker County, Texas, by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Murrill said in another post

Vanburen was originally serving time for a parole violation, possession of a firearm by a felon and illegal carrying of a weapon, Murrill said. Five people were arrested and charged with accessory after the fact for assisting Vanburen, Louisiana State Police said Monday evening.

Tate was originally incarcerated on charges of burglary, possession of a firearm by a felon and illegal carrying of a weapon. He also has a criminal history that includes attempted second-degree murder, the attorney general said. Donald was originally arrested on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The three men will now both face additional charges related to the escape, Murrill said.

The 10 inmates broke out of the jail on May 16, and three were captured in the first 24 hours after their escape.

Surveillance video showed several inmates forcing open a cell door at about 12:22 a.m. CDT on May 16 and breaching a wall behind the cell’s toilet. At around 1 a.m., video showed the inmates fleeing the building through a nearby loading dock, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The escape went unnoticed by the sheriff’s office until approximately 8:30 a.m. on Friday. At the time of the escape, no sheriff’s deputy was assigned to the area where the inmates initiated the jailbreak.

At least nine people have been arrested in connection with the escape of the 10 inmates, including a maintenance worker at the jail, who was accused of shutting off water to a cell that the inmates used in the escape by removing a toilet from the wall.

A fourth person has been arrested in connection with the escape of 10 inmates last week from a New Orleans jail, authorities said.

Louisiana State Police announced Thursday that 59-year-old Connie Weeden of Slidell, Louisiana, has been taken into custody on one felony count of being an accessory after the fact.

According to state police, Weeden was in contact with escapee Jermaine Donald by phone both before and after his jailbreak. She also provided him with cash via a cell phone app after his escape.

Donald is one of five escaped inmates who remain at large. Five have been captured.

On Monday, Sterling Williams, a 33-year-old maintenance worker at the jail, was arrested on charges that he shut off water to a cell that the inmates used in the escape by removing a toilet from the wall, the office of Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said.

Then on Wednesday, state police reported that 32-year-old Cortnie Harris of New Orleans, and 38-year-old Corvanntay Baptiste of Slidell, were also arrested on charges of being accessories after the fact.

The brazen escape from the Orleans Parish Justice Center occurred in the early morning hours of May 16. The escape, part of which was captured on surveillance video, showed the inmates removing a jail cell door off its track and breaching a wall behind the toilet of a cell.

The inmates climbed a fence that separated the jail from a construction site, and eventually sprinted across a freeway. The escape wasn’t discovered until more than seven hours later, at about 8:30 a.m. on May 19.

Weeden has been booked into the St. Tammany Parish Correctional Center.

Fifth escaped New Orleans jail inmate captured; 5 remain at large

Yet another of the 10 inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail late last week has been captured, Louisiana State Police announced Tuesday night. Now five of the escapees remain at large.

State police released a photo of 19-year-old Corey Boyd, in a tank top and T-shirt, after being taken into custody. No details on his capture were immediately provided.

Boyd, who turns 20 on May 26, is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder.

Ten inmates in all broke out of the jail on Friday, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, which runs the facility. Three of the inmates were captured later that day. A fourth was captured Monday, officials said.

It all started in the early predawn hours of Friday morning. Several inmates were caught on surveillance video forcing open a cell door at about 12:22 a.m. CDT, according to the sheriff’s office. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson told reporters the inmates then breached a wall behind the cell’s toilet.

At around 1 a.m., the inmates were seen on video fleeing the building through a nearby loading dock, according to the sheriff’s office. At about 1:19 a.m., the group then climbed over a fence, using blankets to cover barbed wire, and fled across Interstate 10 into a neighborhood.

The escape went unnoticed by the sheriff’s office until approximately 8:30 a.m. Friday, according to the office. At the time of the escape, no sheriff’s deputy was assigned to the area where the inmates initiated the jailbreak, and a civilian monitor stationed in the area had stepped away for food.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced Tuesday that a 33-year-old maintenance worker at the jail was arrested on allegations he helped the inmates escape.

The sheriff’s office had previously said that three workers had been suspended without pay amid an internal investigation into the jailbreak.

Hutson told reporters the inmates may have received help from at least one person inside the sheriff’s office. She also said the office has spent years asking local officials for more than $5 million in funds to upgrade faulty locks on cell doors.
