Sports cars aren’t exactly a dime a dozen these days, and the segment is about to get a little smaller following the 2026 model year. The Toyota GR Supra and BMW Z4 are built alongside one another and share several crucial parts, including the engine and chassis. Both models have now arrived in their final form, albeit with a couple of major differences.

The 2026 model year marks the final iteration of the Toyota GR Supra. To send the sports car on its way, the Japanese automaker added a new range-topping MkV Final Edition trim to the range with a handful of performance and cosmetic changes, ranging from red seat belts to a stiffened suspension.

Reason to love it #1: Starts at $56,900

Available from $56,900, the 2026 Toyota GR Supra sits right in the sweet spot among its competition. At that price, the sports car comes stock with 19-inch wheels, LED lighting all around, and dual exhaust outlets with stainless steel tips. Inside, the GR Supra sticks to the sports car aesthetic, with carbon fiber trim and an 8.8-inch digital gauge cluster.

While the Toyota GR Supra is far from cheap, it offers more niceties compared to the Nissan Z, which starts at under $43,000. Still, it doesn’t quite compare to the luxury offerings of the BMW Z4. When equipped with the same flat-six engine as the GR Supra, the Z4 costs upwards of $65,000.

Reason to love it #2: 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds

The Toyota GR Supra is a powerhouse of a sports car, with 382 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque on hand. Under the hood lies a turbocharged 3.0-liter twin-scroll six-cylinder engine paired with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. At its quickest, the GR Supra reaches 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

Toyota dropped the four-cylinder engine option from the GR Supra’s lineup last year, making the six-cylinder engine the sole powerhouse. If you would rather have the turbocharged four-cylinder engine, you can still find it under the hood of the base BMW Z4 model, which does 60 mph in 5.2 seconds.

Reason to love it #3: MkV Final Edition

The revival of the Supra nameplate was met with plenty of hype, and it looks like Toyota is playing the same tune as the revered sports car heads off into the sunset. The MkV Final Edition starts at just shy of $68,000 and includes performance and cosmetic updates that’ll make your heart flutter.

The GR Supra MkV Final Edition features a refined differential, larger Brembo brake disks, and a revised suspension and chassis. The performance-driven coupe rides on 19-inch matte black wheels with a carbon fiber spoiler and mirror caps. Inside, the MkV Final Edition gets “GR” embroidered on the driver’s seat, along with red seat belts and accent stitching.

Reason to think twice #1: Strange connectivity choices

The Toyota GR Supra features a 10-speaker HiFi sound system, with a 12-speaker JBL premium audio system available as an upgrade. You’d think there’d be connectivity software that would make listening to your own music or podcasts convenient, but you’d be wrong. 

For whatever reason, Toyota chose to make Apple CarPlay an optional feature on the base GR Supra and excluded Android Auto altogether. Wireless Apple CarPlay is part of the Safety & Technology Package Plus JBL, a $3,155 upgrade on the base model that comes standard on the mid-tier 3.0 Premium and MkV Final Edition trims.

Reason to think twice #2: 6-Speed manual isn’t standard

By default, all 2026 Toyota GR Supra models come with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission. That’s a bit odd for a sports car, but the same is true of the BMW Z4. On the bright side, you can switch to the six-speed manual transmission in the build menu on the Toyota website. Notably, switching between the automatic and manual transmissions doesn’t affect the GR Supra’s price, but it does affect what dealers might have in stock.

Final thoughts

The 2026 Toyota GR Supra will be the last of the fifth generation, so if you want a new model, now is the time to pounce! While it isn’t the cheapest sports car on the market, the GR Supra is designed to be a thrill ride. Before you decide on the Toyota GR Supra, make sure to give the BMW Z4 a chance as well!
