Their Finest Hour: 5 British WWII Classics Went the Day Well, The Colditz Story, The Dam Busters, Dunkirk, Ice Cold in Alex

$89.95

Their Finest Hour: 5 British WWII Classics is the seminal 5-disc box set of classic British war films, restored in HD and released for the first time ever on Blu Ray in North America. Went The Day Well:Bramley End, snug and safe, seemed far away from the events of World War II. Little did the villagers suspect the grim events which were impending. They were surprised, but welcomed the lorry loads of Royal Engineers that rolled onto their village green. They had no reason to suspect that the soldiers were disguised German parachutists, and even less reason to mistrust the leader of their little community, Oliver Winsford. The Colditz Story:The Germans believed that no man could escape from Colditz Castle, set as it was in the heart of the Reich, 400 miles from any neutral frontier. This film, based on Pat Reid’s epic novel, tells the story of how the British, French, Dutch and Polish prisoners of war who were incarcerated in Colditz set out to prove their captors wrong. The Dam Busters:An epic war story of World War II. Scientist Dr. Barnes Wallis believes World War II can be shortened by destroying the Ruhr dams, thus paralyzing the enemy’s industrial nerve center. In spite of the difficulties caused by the critical situation at the time, he works steadily to perfect a special bomb of his own invention for the purpose. Air Ace Wing Commander Guy Gibson is chosen to form, train and lead the hand-picked squadron. Flying at tree-top level they cross the Rhine and attack the first dam – Moehne. The bombers seem unable to maintain the accuracy essential for success – then suddenly the masonry begins to crumble.Dunkirk:It is early May: the year 1940. In London, the civil population, lulled into an atmosphere of false security, goes about it’s business as usual. Even the official war communiqué’s merely report activity on the Front. But Charles Forman, war correspondent, knows better. As the war in France takes a turn for the worse, he signs on with the Merchant Navy and volunteers for the greatest mission ever mounted… The evacuation of Dunkirk.Ice Cold In Alex:A thousand square miles of blazing, pitiless desert, and a story so unusual, so gripping that it could spring only from life itself. The Mediterranean of 1942; along the barren North African coast where war has turned towns into smoking ruins, and the grim struggle surges to and fro. But that is just the background; the story is about people, not war – and it happens to be true.

An eclectic collection of great British WWII films, beautifully restored…
I shall forever think of this collection as eclectic, for other than the facts that they are all British-made films and all concern WWII, they have little that tie them together (well, yes, three of them have John Mills in them, but he was in just about every British WWII movie). The above descriptions give a sufficient plot description for each film, and also the recognition each film received from BAFTA, et al.What you have here are five very well-made films, each of which looks at WWII from a very different angle. They are populated by very solid casts (including the aforementioned John Mills, Michael Redgrave, Basil Sydney, Richard Attenborough, Anthony Quayle, and Harry Andrews). I enjoyed each of them and look forward to seeing all of them again in the future. All of these movies have had a new digital restoration and transfer. The result is that each appears in real blu ray quality, with excellent video quality and exceptional audio quality. If you are familiar with any of these films, I guarantee you that you’ve never seen or heard them this good.Bottom line, these are great films, lovingly restored, that preserve a special part of British cinema history, and will provide a great deal of pleasure and entertainment.

    Highest Qualty Classics
Superbly told stories of World War II involving dramatic moments like the ambulance lost in the desert being attacked by German half tracks, Plots to escape a famous impregnable castle of a prison, Truly thrilling bombing raids and the best depiction I’ve ever seen of Dunkirk and rolling skirmishes that preceeded it and lots more. My wife and I loved this set. The high definition transfers are awesome on bluray.

    Classic British WW2 Films
“Ice Cold in Alex” was one of three I’d never seen. Brilliantly done. The only film made during the war is “Went the Day Well” a propaganda film from ’42. Certainly worth seeing. No commentaries but some very good extras on four of the films. All films are in black and white, so that old footage could be inserted. The “Dam Busters” was used by George Lucas for the attack on the Death Star.A good set with some real classics.

    Outstanding Acting!
On the DVDs were excellent and the special features were entertaining and informative too. We thought the quality was superior to movies of the time made in the United States. The booklet enclosed was informative and helpful too. We thought the Dunkirk movie was superior to the version released in the U.S. in the last few years. One difference: The movies in the collection are in black and white and not color. That did not reduce the enjoyment for us.

Sweet and simple review: take 5 of the best ever made British WWII movies, remaster them and put them in a blu ray collector’s set. Voila: Perfection. I can’t say enough about the quality of each print – EXCELLENT… and the movies themselves are all classicsIce Cold in Alex is my All TIme favourite WWII movie (British or American – old school or made in the 21st century) and watching it on blu ray is friggin amazing after seening it on a regular dvd a have dozen times previously. Each one of the films is a classic and anyone thinking about buying WWII movies (British made ones) for the first time should consider this set as their first purchase.Went the Day Well? (the “what if” scenario had the Germans landed on English soil), The Dam Busters – British Engineering brilliance from beginning to end.Dunkirk – stands up to the modern day remake and really concentrates on the individual soldiers. The Colditz Story – brilliant Brit propaganda but with a real story. Excellent. And finally.. did I mention that Sir John Mills appears in several of these films… A Brit Iconic actor is one of the main reasons why all of these films remain classics. My advice: BUY THIS collection NOW, sit back and enjoy.
