    Elementary, my dear viewer
If you like Sherlock Holmes at all, may I suggest these 2 movies, Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes; A game of shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr. They’re fun and great! Keep the mysteries coming.

Probably the best feature-length Sherlock Holmes movies made so far…
We all know Robert Downey Junior by his movies in the MCU franchise, starting with Iron Man and continuing through most of the Avengers-related movies. But were you aware of his starring role in a Sherlock Holmes movie franchise with Jude Law as his Dr. Watson? For pure acting chops, I would say this latter franchise is a better showcase of the skills of Mr. Downey than any of his Marvel movies. This package contains the Blu-Rays of both movies, complete with the standard special features such as trailers, cast interviews, etc…… though neither film has an extended cut.The first movie takes place at the close of the 19th century, and the 2nd one picks up at the beginning of the 20th century. Both films have a similar style and feel, in dialogue, settings, cinematography, action, costume design and mood. Hence they can be watched separately or together, and the 2nd film, Game of Shadows, can be viewed before seeing the first one. Both films are essentially action mysteries, with a touch of comedy, a dash of tragedy, and just a hint of romance. Both films also feature ensemble casts, with multiple protagonists and antagonists, male and female. Unlike the BBC series featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, these movies rely less on witty dialogue, and engage a lot more action… In a way, this is a more complete Sherlock, as they show a detective well-skilled in various martial arts, which is true to the books. Like the BBC series, the plots of both movies focus heavily on political intrigue; with the first movie focused on domestic (UK) intrigue, whereas the second movie is set on the international stage of Europe before WWI.Within the genre of spy movies, these two are considerably much better than the James Bond or Mission Impossible franchises as they whitewash and glorify the role of covert operations, whereas these two Sherlock movies are quite illustrative of European history in general, and British history in particular. The first movie centers around a plot to take over the British government, with the plotters working out of a secret society who mask their actions with demonstrations of magic and spiritualism. These themes are key to understanding the exercise of influence in Western history, with the name Aleister Crowley being an easy one to Google and learn about. The second movie, Game of Shadows, centers around war profiteering, with the chief antagonist being Oxford don James Moriarty, who funnels money to terrorist groups such as the anarchists to have them bomb specific targets. The ultimate aim is to start a European war in which all sides are using the newest and most expensive munitions, supplied by firms that Moriarty has invested in. This storyline is actually the best revelation of WWI I have ever encountered, as it fundamentally goes to the heart of how the Great War started. A scan of news headlines in the 20 years prior to 1914 reveal a string of terrorist attacks that usually targeted pacifist leaders who openly spoke out against a European war. Many of these attacks were perpetrated by anarchists, or affiliated groups. It is only later that investigators from various countries traced the funding of these attacks to wealthy financiers, many of them within the British aristocracy. Overall, toth films are great, and worth watching more than once, which makes this a great purchase.

    THE BARE BONES REVIEW
Contrary to the “import” signification listed by amazon in the title for this item, this Blu-ray double feature contains the authentic U.S. versions of these two films. Shortly after receiving the pack, I had to stop by my local Walmart, and noticed the exact same double pack there for the same low price. There are no large circular ratings, as might be found on films imported to the U.S. It is the region A/1 through and through. The movies themselves are fantastic. Solid acting, great writing, and that classic Guy Ritchie style. Picture quality on the first film is decent. Not much wowed me about this particular transfer, but there were some instances where tiny details popped and reminded you that you were watching a Blu-ray. The picture quality of the second film looked gorgeous. Textures were clean and vivid. Colors were slightly subdued, but that’s normal for this style and setting. The picture quality for this disc was excellent overall, and I found no faults in the sound design. This is a great way to get both films on Blu-ray for cheap, if you’re a fan. I was hesitant to buy them because of the word “import”, but am glad to say this is an error on Amazon’s site. If you’re still on the fence about buying it, just check out your nearest Walmart. Mine had several copies of this same pack for the same price.

Finally! A combo!! ENLARGE THUMBNAIL AND READ CODE FINE PRINT FIRST!
I’m in love with both of these movies, and have been searching to replace the dvds of them that’d been lost for quite some time. This deal was too good to pass up, BUT…do not be fooled by these other reviews, they are NOT Blu-ray, and you will NOT get a code for VUDU streaming, as it says on the photo above that the seller has used. (I wish I would’ve enlarged the photo and saw the “fine print”, so I’d be less disappointed upon opening my package. The sticker touting redeemable streaming codes on the dvd in the photo is why I purchased this set with NO HESITATION, honestly…)The dvd plastic seal was shredded, but the case and discs themselves are still in brand new & mint condition…visibly. I’m sure they will play perfectly as well.Highly recommend for those who are a fan of this duo of movies!

    great value for SH fans
If you like the series, it can’t be better on bluray, and hopefully later on 4K, price willing. Its clearer audio and video than any stream can do, and has extras. You can watch the movie at least twice, first as a movie, and later as a blow by blow commentary of the ‘making of ..’ with PIP inserts. There are several more extras. This is not a multiformat, but has 2 BD disks. Superb value for both movies. The packaging of BD is very economical: the plastic case is very thin, but it does serve to protect the disks in your library. The disk labels are very spartan to be almost unreadable, but the disk plays very well, and is one of the fastest to navigate from on my slow BD player. This thin case causes the disks to dislodge from its case mounts during shipping, but it doesn’t seem to hurt the disk as I receive many other disks this way from this type of thin case.

These 2 movies are about as far removed from the traditional depiction of Sherlock Holmes as I think you’re ever going to see & still believe that you’re watching a Sherlock Holmes mystery. Neither Jeremey Brett’s (whose interpretation in a series on PBS’s Masterpiece Theatre which will probably come to be regarded as definitive), or Benedict Cumberbatch’s truly innovative update of the Holmes saga to the modern day (also a series on PBS), would never consider practically any of the very physical feats, fights, chases, etc., etc., etc., that Guy Ritchie’s Holmes indulges in.As played by Robert Downey Jr., whose acting can be an acquired taste, Holmes is far grittier & grimier than in any previous iterations. Entirely gone is the patrician diifidence with which Holmes’ sailed through London’s vulgar streets, never really being touched by any of his surroundings, the super computer that is his deductive brain always analyzing, always whirring, always detached but observant. Indeed, before Ritchie & Downey got their hands on him, Holmes studied criminals & other mortals almost as if he was examining an alien species.Downey’s Holmes, in contrast, comes across as someone who revels in being human, from romancing femme fatale Irene Adler (who leaves our hero nude & bound in her hotel bed), to engaging in bare knuckle fisticuffs down the London docks, this Holmes likely feels more comfortable in the company of the Baker St. Irregulars (The Irregulars is a Netflix series that features this group, although this time the it’s led by a young women. It’s an interesting re-interpretation of Holmes & worth a look if you get Netflix) than he does at Mycroft’s club. Holmes is still a deductive genius, but he’s also just as likely to knock your teeth out when he exposes you.Jude Law brings an interesting twist to the role of Dr. Watson. His Watson far less fastidious, younger & just as likely as Holmes to mix it up physically with any baddies. He’s also an inveterate gambler, a trait his fiancé (1st film) & then wife Mary (2nd film) is going to have to keep an eye on.Playing the Napoleon of Crime, aka Prof. Moriarty, is Jared Harris, one of my favourite actors. And he doesn’t disappoint here. His Moriarty is the epitome of malevolence. You have no trouble believing that this man has the wit, resources, will & sociopathic remove that would allow him to start a war so he can sell weapons to any & all comers. He is Holmes’ true nemesis, his superior in ruthless cunning & his willingness to employ samel. Finally, we have Stephen Fry as Holmes older brother Mycroft, the head of a nascent MI-6 & an aristocrat who diffidence encompasses walking around his house in the buff, even when Watson’s new bride is a guest. Stephen Fry can say more with a raised eyebrow & pursed lips than a great many other actors. Every time he’s on screen he’s a joy to watch, especially y when he calls Sherlock “Shirley.”I didn’t, on first view, like Ritchie’s Holmes. But, after I watched Game of Shadows, I came to appreciate both of these films. So, if you’d like your Holmes re-imagined, then I recommend either of these films. (And if you’d like some more re-interpretation, check out “The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes,” an overlooked gem of a film from the 1970s that is great fun. If you like either Michael Caine &/or Ben Kingsley, then do have a look at “Without A Clue.” I can guarantee that Caine’s Holmes is someone you’ve never met, but won’t soon forget!!)
