Health Care is a Right: A Memoir
$20.00
When Dr. David Smith, the only son of a railroad worker and a nurse, graduated from the University of California medical school in 1964, he expected to pursue a PhD and a career as a physician, researcher, and faculty member.
But just down the hill from the medical center, the times were changing. A day at the Human Be-In at Golden Gate Park, followed by a fateful LSD trip with friends a few months later, set him on a different course.
In Healthcare Is a Right: A Memoir, the beloved “Dr. Dave” shares his personal story, from building the famous Haight Ashbury Free Clinic with help from friends—like San Francisco music promoter Bill Graham, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and George Harrison—to blazing a trail in the field of addiction medicine.

The remarkable life story of a pioneer in addiction medicine
This memoir by Dr. David E. Smith, founder of Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic, provides a private look into his remarkable life story with refreshing candor. Rather than paint himself as being perfect/all-knowing, he shares his very human foibles…which is entirely endearing. I was left with even greater appreciation of the ground-breaking (and, arguably, career diminishing) early work he did in the area of addiction medicine. His continued work today to advance recognition of psychedelics as medicine is truly admirable.

1960s San Francisco history told by a man who lived through it.
Dr. Smith’s telling of 1960s SF history through the lens of addiction and recovery is a true treasure!

What an open and honest memoir this is.
Fascinating memoir by a noted Bay Area doctor. Dr. Smith’s achievements are well documented in California, but this book will still surprise the reader with its open and transparent account of an historic time in San Francisco. James Hickman

An inspiring memoir
Dr. David Smith provides a thorough and candid account of the incredible life experiences that have precipitated his legendary status in San Francisco history, not to mention his founding contributions to the field of addiction medicine. He is a true original and an inspiring example of how we can approach the problems facing our communities with compassion and pragmatism.

Interesting and Amazing History! Still valuable today!
This was probably the most interesting memoir that Iâve ever read by an amazing guy who is both humble and humanâ- and who plays a part of our history. I learned a lot of information that I did not know, and I appreciated the honesty.

Dr. Smith is a Force for Good
Dr. Smith has been treating and helping people for what 50 odd years! That is extraordinary and he is a man of the utmost integrity. He was the founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic which led to Healthright 360 and Walden House. I have ones very close to me who went through Walden House and who are now productive citizens of the community. Dr. Smith’s work has led to the recovery of many lives. Read about the man and tell others what a great story and read it is.

Wonderful memoir of a life, & life-changing treatment he started!
Beyond grateful to be invited to Dr Smith’s book launch, and to read about all his many developments in NorCal – and the world. So thankful for his many advancements in the field of addiction medicine, and for him giving an honest timeline to his actions. There is no stigma in his world – it just is – and that belief would give our world so much more recovery if all lived as openly and matter-of-fact, as Dr Smith. One day at a time!
