Beyond ChatGPT: OpenAI’s vision for an intelligent future

Imagine a customer wanting to do a banking transaction, say checking their  bank balance. He can pose that question to ChatGPT’s advanced model, and if the bank has adopted the solution, it can start a conversation, access the customer’s account by verifying it by sending an OTP to their registered KYC contact numbers, and answer the queries.

This enhances the customer experience and allows banks to handle a larger volume of queries with fewer resources.

Similarly, HR departments can sift through a huge number of resumes using the advanced models. By simply posing a few filters (experience, geography, etc.), it can help the HR departments can shortlist candidates in no time. “You can even schedule interview schedules using the solution,” Atty Eleti, a member of technical staff at OpenAI, has said.

Demonstrating the capabilities of some of the OpenAI’s advanced models at T-Hub here on Friday, he said that the upcoming AI solutions would continue to become smarter, moving beyond simply answering questions to actually performing tasks and solving complex problems. Talking on the ‘Unlocking OpenAI’s potential for India’, he spoke on some advanced models such as O-Series (‘Reasoning’ models) GPT-4 Mini, and Sora. While the reasoning models demonstrate an ability to ‘think’ before responding, GPT-4 Mini is a more cost-effective version of GPT-4, and Sora helps users create realistic HD videos simply by providing text prompts. 

Eleti said the future of AI interaction would extend beyond text and voice to encompass a broader range of modalities, including video, physical motion, and even social cues.

“The upcoming AI models will dynamically generate user interfaces, control robots, and interact with the physical world in more sophisticated ways, blurring the lines between the digital and real,” he said.

As AI technology advances, it will become more affordable and accessible to a wider population. He said OpenAI was committed to reducing the cost of its models and making them available through various platforms, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the transformative power of AI.
Pegging the user base for LLMs at about 0.5-1 billion, he said there a large number of people in the world that are yet to access these services.

India plans

He said India emerged as the second biggest base for the US company in terms of the user base and the number of developers. 

“India is a key market for its technology, with the country boasting the second-largest user base for its products. Millions of Indians are already using OpenAI’s tools for various purposes, from education and personal productivity to business operations.

He said the company has significantly invested in improving its models’ support for Indian languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, and Urdu. This has resulted in an 80 per cent reduction in token counts for these languages, leading to faster processing times and lower costs.

He said the company was working with Indian businesses to demonstrate the potential of AI and encourage its adoption. He cited the examples of 10Bed ICU, which uses  OpenAI’s technology to transcribe doctor-patient conversations and summarise patient files, and HealthifyMe, an AI-powered nutrition tracker that  provides personalised health insights.
