I’ve been working as a mattress writer for a while now and in that time I’ve seen a marked improvement in my sleep.
So for Sleep Awareness Week 2025, I want to share the one big hack that ensures I regularly enjoy a quality eight hours (and it’s not from TikTok) — getting a mattress that suits me.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some sleep trends worth your time. I might never try mouth taping again, but mindfulness for sleep has changed how I approach my bedtime routine.
However, no trend has provided the consistent, reliable sleep of choosing a mattress that meets my sleep needs. I’ve been lucky enough to test some of the best mattresses of 2025 and experienced first hand how the right bed for my sleep style results in better rest overall.
A good mattress is the foundation for better sleep. With that support, I can try the latest hacks knowing even a dud trend won’t damage my rest in the long-term. If you’re serious about sleep, you need to invest in a new mattress.
Good sleep that lasts longer than a TikTok trend
I used to wake up with neck ache and jaw pain so often I just figured it was a part of life. Surely we all spend the morning massaging away muscle tension?
Then I got a mattress that actually supported my sleep needs and now I know what it means to wake up feeling refreshed.
I’m a stomach sleeper, which is typically considered the worst position to sleep in due to the strain it puts on your spine.
On my old mattress, I felt every problem caused by my awkward posture. But when using a mattress for stomach sleepers, my body is supported from head to toe, allowing my muscles to relax.
I’ve seen the results both in my sleep quantity — I’m less likely to wake up in the night and I drop off without the requisite 30 minutes of tossing and turning — but also in my sleep quality.
The hours I spend sleeping are more restorative, as my body isn’t fighting a bed that works against it.
If you aren’t a stomach sleeper, you can choose a mattress for your sleep needs (there’s a mattress in a box for everyone.)
For example, the best mattresses for side sleepers offer plush relief at the shoulders and hips, while cooling mattresses disperse heat to prevent night sweats from waking you up.
And a good mattress will last for around seven to 10 years, potentially even longer. That’s a whole lot of viral trends to cycle through with your mattress providing a comfortable base the entire time.
The right mattress takes the pressure off sleep
I find the current obsession with sleepmaxxing a mixed bag. On the one hand, I love that people are recognizing the value of a good night’s rest. On the other, this focus on perfecting sleep creates pressure, which can lead to stress, guilt and, ironically, worse sleep.
A good mattress is a sleep hack you can rely on, no overthinking and no pressure. My mattress is there after a long day, when I don’t have time to indulge in my full bedtime routine. I can (almost literally) collapse on the bed and enjoy the relief and support my body needs.
And with this reliable base, I can focus on building a sleep routine that works. Because even if TikTok hypnosis doesn’t act like a sleeping pill, with the right mattress for my needs, my body will still be getting support throughout the night.
