The Secret Language of the Body: Regulate Your Nervous System, Heal Your Body, Free Your Mind

“Inspiring, refreshing and practical—a delightfully lucid guide to healing yourself.”–Bessel van der Kolk, MD., New York Times bestselling author of The Body Keeps the Score

From two mind-body practitioners comes the new essential self-healing bible—a revolutionary body-first guide to reducing stress, resolving long-term pain, and healing from trauma for good using your body’s own nervous system.

Your autonomic nervous system is responsible for the constant but mostly subconscious communication between your brain and body. When you experience stress, anxiety, or trauma, your nervous system formulates responses to keep you alive. But you can also become trapped in survival mode if you’re consistently exposed to unsafe environments, toxic relationships, or destructive thought patterns. When this happens it’s known as nervous system dysregulation or sensitization, which can result in chronic mental and physical pain and confusion, leaving you unable to cope with life’s strains and stresses.

Mind-body practitioners Jen Mann and Karden Rabin, co-founders of the Chronic Fatigue School, now provide the first in-depth look at nervous system regulation, somatic therapy, Polyvagal theory, the vagus nerve, and the mind-body connection. Combining science-backed insights and hands-on techniques, The Secret Language of the Body teaches you how to move out of survival mode, regulate your nervous system, and heal your mind and body. Rabin and Mann don’t teach stress management, but something far more powerful–how to control your body’s nervous system. With this revolutionary book, you will learn to skillfully speak the language of your body and train it to not only manage stress but achieve personal transformation.

the nervous system, explained in simplistic, yet deep detail
I work in mind-body health and one of my clients recommended that I read this book. I found it to be very easy to follow, with plenty of depth regarding the concepts and supporting science. The A I R model of nervous system healing provides you with a perpetual way of living rather than a short-term forced attempt to get past something. The somatic practices provide a quick pattern interrupt, with guidance taking you beyond just pausing—into the root causes themselves. As an author myself, I was very impressed by the authors’ ability to deconstruct lofty scientific jargon into easy to grasp, useable models. Really nice.

Healing from years of chronic health issues
Wow! This book has been an incredible manual to help guide me in getting relief from chronic migraines, food sensitivities, and the on-going overwhelm of life! The info presented in this book is insightful and just makes sense. Each section practically walks you through step by step on how to regulate your mind/body. I love how organized and easily laid it all is. And the practices are sooo easy to implement! And miraculously over time and you included these practices daily, your symptoms start to lesson. I highly highly recommend this book to anyone suffering with any unwanted symptoms! The only part I disagree with in this book is the authors take on how we “evolved” I just disregarded that part and found everything else so helpful!!

A practical guide for daily benefit
I first got it from my local library and read it over 3 weeks and tried out all the exercises in the book. I liked it so much that I ordered a copy for myself after returning the library book. Before I came upon this book I was already on a self-healing journey; I had been practicing meditation, qi gong and yoga regularly, was aware of polyvagal theory, read books on emotion, sought multiple types of holistic medicine and had already resolved a lot of my symptoms, so when I read this book everything made sense and allowed me to not only connect dots between a lot of scattered knowledge and beliefs from my own felt experience but also gain new insight and missing pieces. I like how the book is organized, it’s easy to read and provides such a clear and gentle guide to a self-discovery journey. I highly recommend it to anyone with chronic physical symptoms and/or mental struggle, or a simple curiosity about cultivating higher mind-body awareness. If you’re new to a lot of the concepts in the book and feel skeptical, I recommend that you don’t try hard to accept it but don’t dismiss it either. Take a pause, try other things, maybe do your own research, then maybe come back to it later.

This is THE book on polyvagal support I have been waiting for!
There are so many books out there.. all by the major players in the field; Deb Dana, Peter Levine, Bessel Van Der Kolk, Dr. Aimie Apigan, Irene Lyon, Zahabiyah A. Yamasaki and this book has so far a good ease of reading, excellent diagrams, citing of references, and descriptions. Also their language is uplifting, informative and soothing. I can’t wait to try these exercises!

    Comprehensive and Healing Book
This book summarizes decades of work in the field of neurology and somatic providing a strong rationale for the use of mind/body tools in healing. They presented many helpful frameworks and gave wonderfully illustrated tools for regulating the nervous system. As tempting as it may seem, don’t rush through the book or jump ahead to the exercises. Read it a little at a time allowing the content to marinate within yourself. PS: I’m a somatic experiencing practitioner and therapist. This book is a must read for anyone engaged with this type of therapy. Very grateful for the addition of breath awareness as a component of healing.

Excellent book with a lots of knowledge
A wonderful book that did not disappoint. Recently, I have really started to delve into the nervous system and how our inner self controls our life in many ways. Through this book, I learned so much more in depth about the nervous system and how I can work on regulating this amazing system myself. The book is very well done and goes into depth, something I like. Recommended!

Good primer but just a primer
This book is a slow read.It contains excellent information, is full of quotable text, and is a great start to the mind-body/trauma theories out there. But, this book is not, in my opinion, a one-stop-shop. It can start you off with excellent exercises (BASE is great) and give you the information you need to buy into the concepts that are the starting points of entering the mind-body/trauma theory space, but you’ll likely need several something elses not in this book, too, such as emotion processing theory, etc.

Best $20 you’ll spend for your nervous system!
I’ve read a few books about nervous system reset and this one is by far my favorite. Super practical, easy to understand & apply, and such great use of client stories that really help you see HOW to apply these things.12 out of 10. Put it in your cart, press buy.

I loved this book because it not only teaches you how your nervous system works but also gives you lots of practises to influence the phases that you’re in. English isn’t my first language but I was still able to understand it all. I find that the practises really work if you put the effort in, some feel quite silly and others will bring you great relief. I’m very glad I found this book and I’ve been trying all of them in the hopes of healing my (as I found out; severely dysregulated) nervous system.

This book is a GAME CHANGER. I’ve been are able to apply it’s guidance from the beginning, and though I’ve only gotten through the first quarter, it is already making such a difference in my day to day life. I rarely leave reviews, but after yet another very meaningfull passage of the book I felt compelled (again) to put it down and write this to express my gratitude to the authors and their publisher. No healing knowledge, tool or approach is a universal remedy that will solve everything, but boy, does this address a hugely important piece of the puzzle that I had been missing.I have done a fair amount of healing and work on myself for the last 13 years, through therapy, reading, connecting with others and my work (I am blessed and lucky to be able to make art for a living). Through all of this, I have been able to successfully deal with much trauma, discover neuro diversity and understand specific mental traits of mine which didn’t need fixing as I had always thought.Despite all this work and healing, (done primarily on the mind side of things) I was quite perplexed as more and more serious symptoms of physical exhaustion gradually started arising in my body for the last 4 years. So I guess I was more than ready to discover the wisdom and teachings in this book. As the budists say, « when the student is ready the master appears » and so Jenn appeared in my instagram feed.Who knew that we are not just the thinking voice that speaks with words in our mind? We are also the feeling and perceiving creature that lives in our body, like russian dolls !Who knew we have more than just our word-based languages; and that feeling, emotions and perception are not just fluffy, weak, encumbering and dismissable parts of our existence? (not my true beliefs but certainly borrowed views I had internalized growing up, sigh!)It is not like I had never heard about intuition, or read about many of these topics before, but never had I read things explained and connected in this particular way. It just clicked and made so much sense to me. It also provides a super interesting framework for me to understand many experiences I have had through making art or writing poetry. I used to say that it was such a relief to connecto to my « art making state » that it felt like it «connected me to a different tv channel of existence ». With this book I understand better why I feel this. Finally, let me say that I particularly appreciate that the book is written from both a professional practitioner’s knowledge gained through client work (which is very valuable in itself), AND also complemented by the real life experience and hard-earned wisdom of a human that has gone through some of the gravest and most difficult consequences of not understanding your nervous system. Jenn, I am very thankful that I have found this before my symptomps evolved into a full-blown, mind-and-body-crippling burnout, and I commend you for having been able to overcome yours. You guys have reminded me that no one is irreparably broken, there is so much we can do, at so many levels, and this book can help with an essential part of anyone’s healing journey. It gives me so much hope for the future.I wish to complete this review when I have finished reading, but let me say that just what I have learnt so far makes it totally worth buying it.I have already started gifting it to friends, so that when they feel ready, help will be waiting for them in their library, at their fingertips.I hope this review will help you give this gift to yourself too.

I wrote a very detailed review but Amazon said it breached their guidelines, I think possible because I talked too much about my past & why I’ve got a disregulated nervous system so here is my brief review. This book is excellent, very informative with thorough explanations together with practical exercises. If you want to know how to heal your nervous system & have tried conventional therapies & they haven’t worked this book explains why & gives you the way out/the path. The first time I read it I was a bit overwhelmed as it contains a lot of information, the second time I understood it & made my own notes referencing page numbers to refer back to. As Jen & Karden say, pick the parts that speak to you, resonate with you & go with the practices. For the first time I am listening to my body & what it is trying to say to me instead of focusing on what my mind & thoughts are telling me. I’m trying not to ignore the whispers of my body, if you truly listen your body has all the answers. This book will show you how. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to heal their nervous system, you may have felt like this for years, I know I have & this book will show you how. After a week of reading it and doing some of the practices I already feel better. I’m on a journey to get to know me & my body & again this book has the answers.Reading Jen’s own story & the other real life stories really resonated with me. There is hope, you are not stuck & you are certainly not broken. Thank you Jen & Karden for writing, this book will help a lot of people. I highly recommend this book.
