Japanese automobile giants Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors have announced their intent to merge, potentially creating the world’s third-largest automaker by sales. The merger aims to address the challenges posed by the industry’s rapid shift towards electrification and emerging technologies.
The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore a strategic partnership, with smaller alliance member Mitsubishi Motors also joining discussions. Mitsubishi is evaluating its involvement in the integration and aims to reach a decision by January 2025.
The proposed merger involves the creation of a joint holding company, with the three automakers working towards greater synergy in areas such as electric vehicle components and autonomous driving technology. The collaboration underscores the urgency among Japanese automakers to catch up with global rivals in the race to dominate the EV market.

Honda and Nissan had already begun exploring their partnership in March, and by August, Mitsubishi Motors had joined the talks. The trio has since focused on sharing EV components, including batteries, and advancing software development for autonomous vehicles.
If finalized, the Honda-Nissan alliance could significantly reshape the global automotive hierarchy, marking a pivotal moment in the transition to a more sustainable future.
As discussions progress, the collaboration promises to bolster the companies’ competitiveness and redefine their approach to emerging technologies. Mitsubishi’s involvement, though not yet confirmed, could further amplify the partnership’s impact, ensuring a united front as they embrace the challenges and opportunities of the electrified era.
