With the title race decided a few days ago, Formula 1 has made a major announcement, confirming that General Motors (GM) will officially join the grid as the 11th team for the 2026 season under its Cadillac brand. The American automotive giant, partnering with TWG Global, marks its debut in the sport, with plans to transition into an engine supplier later this decade.
This decision follows months of speculation and earlier setbacks, as F1 initially rejected GM’s bid in partnership with Andretti Global in January 2024, citing commercial concerns. However, a series of operational milestones and strengthened commitments paved the way for the governing body’s approval.
Cadillac F1, the name of the new team, will operate under the leadership of TWG Global’s Dan Towriss and Mark Walter, who recently took majority ownership of Andretti Global. The team plans to use Ferrari power units for the 2026 and 2027 seasons before rolling out its Cadillac-branded engines by 2028.

Formula 1, which has maintained a grid of 10 teams since 2017, expressed enthusiasm for the expansion. “General Motors has demonstrated a clear commitment to Formula 1 and its future,” read an official statement, emphasizing the importance of GM’s entry as a step toward broader global appeal and technological innovation.
With this development, GM becomes the third American team in F1’s history, signifying the sport’s growing popularity in the U.S. Further details on the team’s plans and operations are expected in the coming months.
