When we try applying Vastu principles to multi-functional spaces like flex rooms and open floor plans, we face some unique challenges that we probably have never considered before. This happens because, unlike traditional rooms that serve one purpose, these spaces are designed to adapt and change based on various needs, so we need to adapt Vastu guidelines to suit their flexibility instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach to it.
One of Vastu’s most important tenets is the dictation of which direction holds what kind of significance. For example, areas dedicated to rest, work, or socialising should ideally align with specific directions. North and east are generally associated with positive energy for studying or working, while south and west are suitable for relaxing or sleeping. However, in a flexible space that may serve multiple functions, it becomes crucial to use design elements that allow the room to change per purpose without disturbing the flow of the energy within it.
One way to achieve this is through adaptable furniture arrangements. Using dividers, movable furniture, or modular layouts can help subtly shift the room’s function without making it look suffocating, blocking the flow of energy and your peace of mind. For instance, if a room needs to serve as both an office and a guest room, you could place the desk in the northeast corner, while setting up the guest bed towards the south or west. When it’s not in use, a foldable bed or sofa bed could be a better option.
Natural light also plays a critical role in maintaining Vastu balance. Open floor plans often allow light to flow freely, which is beneficial. To maximize this, try to keep windows unobstructed and, if possible, orient work or activity zones towards the natural light source. Mirrors can also help reflect light into darker areas, balancing the energy across the room.
Placing furniture and maintaining open pathways can literally be all you need to balance your place. Think smart, roger the idea of clustering and blocking in your mind and you will know how to navigate through it without needing to be told. All things considered, that will be a job well done.
